I have a 16 plate JKU with the stock 18inch alloys and duellers.

Would like a more off-road focused tyre, for light mud and track type work.

For some reason I got thinking that a 17 inch wheel might be better and thought about picking up some used Rubicon wheels or similar. Is the smaller wheel the right approach?

Anyone any advice on tyres?

Thanks

17"s give you a better choice of offroad tyre, plenty of new take off 17" JK rims on the bay, going rate is about £50 a pop, I got 5 with new GY tyres for £280 delivered

Are you wanting stock size or bigger? Do you have a lift?

You should be able to fit 33’s no probs. Maybe even squeeze a 35” tyre on depending on the tread.

There are some 18” options these days. But probably more choice with 17” and even more with 16” (don’t know if you can fit 16’s though).

There is no real advantage to 17” over 18” other than availability though.

Lots of choice new and remould. Don’t discount remoulds. Although if you plan lots of road use you may find a new tyre wears better. Ones with sipes in will work better on wet roads and in snow and ice.

Cooper, General, BFG, Kuhmo, Federal, Maxxis and many others all worth considering.

Remoulds; Malatesta, Insa Turbo, Fedima and others.

Look for a set of take-off 17s with Goodyear Wranglers on, seems right for what you describe. As others have said, should be around £300 on eBay.

No lift as yet but i’m not ruling out a modest one, and a slightly wider track.

Some 17s off eBay sounds like the answer and I reckon a 245 75 17 should give roughly the same overall diameter as my current set up.

Thanks for the tyre pointers; i’ll see what is out there.

I was very suprised at the grip the boggo GY Wrangler ATs gave When I used them on my GC, admittedly it wasn't wet, but they performed really well, and these are the ones you tend to find on the new take offs as I did

Where did you get the extreme ones?

Would they fit on a bog standard 2014 Wrangler?

Thanks

Sadly not my Wrangler. Although I do have those tyres.

They are called Ziarelli Brutale. TyresDirect in Luton used to stock them. But not sure where you can get them at the mo. Probably mail order from Europe.

These are the 17" Wranglers on my wife's Wrangler. For light off-road they are fine, also good on the road. 300's extreme tyres look good for off-road, but, I would think they are compromised for on-road.

What specific Goodyear wrangler tyre is that?

Have been looking at the Duratrac variant, which seem popular in the US.

Plenty of wrangler 17’s on the Bay, but a nice set of Rubicon alloys keeps winking at me.

Just the standard M&S All Terrain that comes as OE fitment.

The new Duratrac looks like a very nice tyre. Almost a do anything go anywhere tyre. Should be nice on the road in the wet or ice with the sipes. But capable of a bit of mud too.

The ones in the picture above are much more road biased.

I am looking for a set of rugged extreme tyres and wheels to swap with the standard ones for occasional winter or off-road times.

Any pointers?

Thanks

The Duratracs mentioned above, or choose any All Terrain with the Mountain/Snowflake symbol.

Another vote for Duratracs. One of the best all-around tires out there.
