I've just purchased a 2007 Volvo XC70 3.2 petrol auto for £3,500 and it has every toy known to man :

Auto
Full electric heated leather
Keyless entry and start
Power tailgate
Dolby Pro-logic stereo
Sat nav
Reverse camera
Blind sport cameras in the wing mirrors
bluetooth phone
DVD headrest tv's
at 250bhp it's surprisingly spritely and sounds good

Bad points:
20mpg
£535 tax

I've got to say I love it. It was meant to be a short term means of getting about after getting rid of my Golf R , but I have a sneaking suspicion it'll be with me for a while.

Thanks all again

I will keep my eye out for the Jeep appearing.

I need to look at the Volvo. The tax initially puts me off but if the car is right then as a cost of ownership it may work.

Very nearly leased a new Toureg, bit went for an A6 Allroad in the end. Will have a look at these as well though.

Pretty much any of the big 4x4s will be in the £535 bracket for 2006 on models.

Thanks for pointing that out. I had thought the diesels would be lower for some reason .

Pre end of March 2006 cars should be okay for tax.

Apologies for bumping my own thread.

We are shortly due to get a dog and I'm now looking at getting a slightly larger vehicle. I've also taken this as an opportunity for some budget creep.

Anybody got any thoughts on the following;

https://www.twilliamscarsales.co.uk/used-cars/toyo...

The MOT history looks good to me and overall it looks a decent option but I'm not sure price wise how it stacks up.

Given the increased budget, I'm looking at up to 10K now, is there anything else I should now be looking at.

Thanks again in advance

That is a LOT of money for a 19 year old car eek

A mate of mine has a V8 petrol one of these (similar age, but not as nice condition as the car you're looking at). Whilst it is undoubtedly huge, the interior isn't all that nice, in terms of quality or look/feel. It's a boaty old thing, too - doesn't handle anywhere nearly as well as my L322 Range Rover did.

Which brings me nicely onto the L322 Rangie. wink With your original budget of £5k, I didn't want to recommend an L322, so I didn't. But for £10k? Absolutely. If I had ten grand to spend on a big, competent, comfortable 4x4, with all the toys, I'd be sinking the cash into an unmolested Rangie.

Something like this, in fact, keeping £2k in my back pocket for potential future bills...

Dog isn't that big smile but the car will be used mainly for camping trips and we will have 5 people in the car plus dog plus equiment.

It will be a 3rd car so light use really but coming out of my company car scheme lets me play with what I get.

I was looking at the range rover. My worry as most will say will be reliability, hence the leaning towards the Toyota. I'm no expert though!

Buying a 4.2 VX really is bringing a gun to a knife fight. They're expensive because they've still got a following amongst people who like towing really heavy trailers/caravans in comfort. I think I'd prefer one over an old Range Rover. Bit over the top for the OPs needs but it's got man cred.

Bit left field, via Chelsea, but I picked this up for less than £5k last month smile

The Amazon Landcruisers are beasts, really strong and comfortable things, unfortunately I went for a Prado which, although very reliable doesn’t really do it for me so I’m looking to move back into a Disco or RR.
To be fair to them, yes some things can be expensive on them, but maintenance is key!, if one has had the gearbox oil replaced on schedule, the air suspension compressor done etc then they’re not that bad, or as I’ve found with previous Land Rovers you either get a very good one which gives no trouble or an absolute pile of crap, they’re not big on middle ground.

Saying that though if you’ve got a £10k budget to work with and you’re not doing many miles, id go for either a Supercharged RR, or a Cayenne Turbo.

The point a lot of people don't get when slagging off things like Land Rovers is that they are often used as commercial vehicles by their first owner and are only punted off onto the secondhand market when there are about to incur major repair bills.

Ditto VXs they're popular with a certain type of owner who'll keep it until it's on its last mechanical legs.

Meh. Discovery 3 will throw some big bills at you regardless of who has owned it.

At £10k, I would consider a Range Rover L322. Better value than the Discovery 3 and the interior is much nicer too.

Jeep Grand Cherokee still worth considering. At least you can easily update the Infotainment in the Cherokee. Forget that in the D3 unless you want to spend £1300.

To update and provide some closure

I've had the option to come out of my company car scheme so have bought a lightly used Discovery Sport. Pick up in 2 weeks.

I know there are some reliability 'challenges' but I got a great deal through the priveledge scheme.

Slight move away from my original £5k budget but this will become one of 2 cars now and not one of 3.

Thanks again for some really great advice.
