Hello all,

I'm planning to buy a either a Mitsubishi Shogun or a Toyota Landcruiser Colorado, for greenlaning during holidays. In both cases I'm looking at the generations sold in the second half of the 1990's. A 3rd generation Toyota 4Runner/Hilux Surf is definitely an option too, as I will probably import a car from Japan.

I've been asking around on various Toyota- and Mitsubishi forums, but it's probably wise to get some unbiased opinions as well smile. I am mainly interested in information on the reliability of these cars and the longevity of engines, drive train components and suspension components. Last but not least, I am very interested to know how badly these cars rust. Comparing both brands on these issues is an important input for my decison on what car to buy.

Do of any of you have experiences with both Mitsubishi's and Toyota's of the models mentioned? Any opinions, or hints on where to find comparative information are highly appreciated !

Regards,
Frans

I have a 52 plate Colorado VX which I have owned since 2006 and it now has 128k on the clock.

Wonderful vehicle, very reliable, capable and comfortable.

ETA - There's no rust anywhere to speak of and the chassis is sound.

I can't speak with any authority about the Shogun, but anecdotally I think they're also very good but perhaps less longevity & reliability than the Toyota.

Let me know if you want any more info re the LC.

I also have a Colorado
It's an S reg (98?)
Has about 235,000 miles on the clock. Always starts. A little bit of rust, a couple of minor issues
Easy to fix, fairly economical (30mpg), quick enough
Would highly recommend it. I got mine for £1200, I imagine I could pass it on for a similar amount
Don't know so much about the Shogun!

I think the Shoguns have a bit of reputation for rust. You certainly see very few about.

If you are in the UK, you'll be wanting to consider a Land Rover also. Capable and a huge choice with really good parts supply.

No not really. But it's certainly a plus point being able to get them easily next day and usually have a choice too.

I'd expect the Toyotas (or pre-2000 Nissan Patrol or Pathfinder/Terrano as long as you avoid the ZD30 engine) to be much more rugged and reliable than the Mitsubishis. FWIW Mitsis aren't really regarded as serious 4wds in this part of the world.

Shogun's are great. Ive had many. Several Mk2s, one Mk3 and my brother brought a 65' plate SG3.

Great for off roading once you put BFG tyres on. I did many a green lane session in mine.

All can suffer from fuel pump issues, Mk3's have rusty fuel pipes, Mk2 suffer from crack heads.

Rust can creep in. This is down to previous maintenance / rust preventation.

Price wise, Landcruisers are more expensive like for like.

milners is a great online store for shogun parts. Cheap as chips.

for me, 2007/8 Mk4 Diamond LWB, in silver, 65K 9k. Great deal. You have a good 100K left it it, great for green laning.

I had an early 90's Pajero / Shogun in Aus, had over 400k km, rattled like crazy, sl noisy autobox and horribly slow but otherwise no issues.

Replaced it with a 97 Prado / Colorado on 250k km, felt much more solid, better handling on road, quicker and no rattles what so ever.

Had a new 03 Shogun in the family, needed welding for it's 1st or 2nd mot which was disappointing, still on field duty now though.

I would say similarly capable off road, Prado was more comfortable for long trips. Both are decent buys if you find the right one, just have a good look for rust with the Mitzi. .
