God yes, based on 30 yrs driving all sorts.
Defenders are truly awful cars. They are a commercial truck. Jeep are so badly made and horrendous on fuel as well as rubbish in really tough offroad. Oh and Jeep parts ! ffs.

Vitara, is the comfy option, Jimny is the offroad tool option. Both make a half decent car as well.

L200 is the proper job.
Ive owned a L200 series 5 and loved it. Did everything I asked of it. Just fancy something different. Plus for some reason to insure a l200 now is going to cost me a extra £500 compared to everything else.

Jeep parts I’ll give you. The rest just sounds like nonsense I’m afraid.

I can only go by what I've experienced.

None of the above is nonsense. Older Jeep cars are utter crap. Newer ones are badly built in my opinion and could never cope with any hard life.

Defenders are absolutely commercial trucks, they are in no way a car.

You are of course entitled to your own opinion and I probably won't even tell you you talk nonsense.

I can’t see anything wrong with the Grand Cherokee. I don’t think it’s any worse on fuel than any other big engined motor that size.

I don’t think we’ve had the Nissan Pathfinder mentioned have we?

Earlier ones are in the lower bracket.

If you don't need a truck then the Land Cruiser D4-D would do the job.

I’ve had a 120 Series 3.0 D4D Landcruiser and a Shogun MK3 3.2 DID, out of the two the Landcruiser was better but not by miles, however I’d still pick one over a Shogun if buying another, also had a RR Vogue and Sport and wouldn’t touch either of them again!.

You're in the ballpark for a Discovery 3 at that budget. It might be a more suitable vehicle for everyday duties than the rather agricultural suggestions being made.

Based on how it performed on a recent TGT Columbia Special, one of these should do the trick if you can find one wink

I’ve had a defender 90 which I loved, was hugely capable but so unreliable!
Have had a hilux surf 3rd gen for 5 years which is amazing, I love it, comfortable, very reliable, incredibly handy and in my opinion a good looking truck.

The Discovery 2 is the thinking man's Defender and for £7k, you could buy a late top-spec, low mileage example. They're way more comfortable than a Defender and if you get one with ACE (active anti-roll bars), they handle surprisingly well. The only downside is that some can require a lot of TLC. For most of these 4x4s, I'd recommend joining the owners' clubs and buying one from a member...if they've got an online forum, you might find the vehicle's history on there too, which helps to avoid buying a lemon! wink

Depends on the type of use and mileage you're doing. Defenders do have a loyal following and there's plenty of them around to choose from. For your budget a Disco 2 or 3 would be a more comfortable option. With any off roaders, probably best to try one out with a club to find which suits you best.

Jeep are miles better than the suzuki’s and the best value secondhand. For your budget I’d be looking at Grand Cherokee (overland) or a LR discovery.

I like the Shogun. But better in every single way? Nope. Articulation, flex, off road ability, utility, adaptability.

Agreed, they don't really deal with rough stuff anywhere like as well as LR's finest. But they are quite good as a cross country car and they can last for decades.
