I ran a V8 WJ for a while on gas and loved it. Cheap inside, but well put together mechanically at least and never gave any trouble. I found it fine on the road contrary to reviews and of course fantastic off road.

I'm now tempted by the WK. Are they as sturdy as the older ones? What is the Merc lump like in terms of reliability? I'm not expecting great mpg nor do I care. Tax is eye watering but but so be it.

Limited or Overland seems to be the spec to go for (parking sensors, etc). The Overland has the big screen - anything else of note?

Cheers smile

Overland also has the sunroof if you want that - the big screen gives you the sat nav and a six disc cd player.

I had a 4.7v8 WJ from 38kmiles through to 110kmiles and then lost it (divorce). A great car apart from the fuel consumption! but also cheap to run as bought cheap and then made £3k from it on an insurance buy back and repair after it was written off. I liked it and liked the build quality and simple engineering.

I now have a WK3.0CRD - it is well built, solid, unstoppable (like the WJ) and a nice drive. Coming from the WJ slower but more economical 24mpg round town - you can remap if you miss the power...

Things to watch out for are;
- oil cooler leak - its buried in the middle of the v - apparently the seals perish,
- swirl flap motor above turbo, oil from the turbo recirc drips from the 'elephant' hose onto the motor and wrecks it, it can be bypassed tho as fails safe,

Other than that just the usual jeep points like diff wine, gearbox function and electrics.

The engine is as you say a Merc OM something or other so pretty reliable. The engine is also the same as the Chrysler 300C 'anthillmob/gangster waggon' so their facebook forum has some useful stuff on what to look for on the engine.

I paid £4.5k for a 65kmile one + demo car but in high tax band.

I like it....

Good reading thank you. I had forgotten about jeepforum in the States, I think I have an account on there too.

I think I'll definitely start looking for one.

psychoR1 pretty much covers it from my experience. Assume they have all got the oil cooler / seal leak unless there is evidence to say its been done. They drip from the bellhousing area underneath. The parts are cheap to fix it but a labour intensive job so not many get done. Glow plug control modules often faulty - glow plug codes likely to be the module as well as the plugs. They need a good battery - fault codes surrounding low voltage common - bank on a fresh battery if the one fitted looks anything other than pretty recent. ABS lights / codes not uncommon due to wheel sensors which is a bearing / hub replacement.

A great car now just about at shed money. Just be aware of the common issues.

After 2 CRDs I have now got a 4.7 V8, going for a stainless exhaust for a bit more V8 woofle. The other posters covered most of the issues, just go for it.

Great cars loved mine for the 2.5 years I had it.

Glow plug controller needed replaced as did wishbone bushes, but apart from that all good. Surprisingly fast for a big bus. Dont expect great mpg. I once managed 30 mpg on a trip to Oban, but generally motorway driving saw 27 whilst urban saw 22 or 23 mpg.

i ran a V8 WJ as a little use third vehicle for about 15 years, and finally swapped it last year for an Overland WK.
the modern perks are nice, the overland also has the air suspension which is pretty good and smooths out the bumps
with a lowering mode for getting the old folks in

averaging around 29mpg at the moment, with no mechanical issues cool

Thread Resurrection!

So jeep Wk’s of 2005+ vintage have air suspension in overland trim. If so, is it self levelling?

It may only have been an option, as our '08 WK Overland has standard springs.

ETA: on the list of 'things to check', I'd also add the fuel tank - at least on the CRD. The steel tank sits in a steel 'skid plate/retaining carrier' - a poor design as a combination of salt/road cr@p/vibration encourages corrosion and subsequent tank leaks. New tanks are >£600, and good secondhand ones hard to find and pretty expensive. I believe the petrol models use a plastic tank - no idea why this wasn't done on the diesel model.
