Why ar BFG tyres so well respected?
I am shortly in the market for 6 tyres.
265 x 65 x 17 BFG or prefered (265 x 70 x 17) All terrain.
I have heard that the side walls on the BFG are stronger than most.
What else sets the BFG apart from the rest, or are there other makers of all terrains that also have a good tyre construction.
I have heard reports of over landers driving from UK to Cape Town, and not having a single puncture with the BFG.

Why not take a look at thr General Grabber AT2, they make a 265/65x17 and a 265/70x17, the second one is a stronger construction than the first, BFGoodrich only make a 265/70x17 and as there prices went up by 7% on the 1st April are starting to get a little expensive, I also think that thr quality has slipped a little as the BFG oes not balance as well as the General.
Also the wet weather performance is better with the AT2, a slightly softer compound which is better in the wet.

My wife has a 2003 LC5 which we have had from new and as soon as we got it home we fitted 265/70x17 BFG AT KO's, they were fine for about 35,000 miles, we then fitted the General Grabber AT2's which are still on the LC5 now after a good 30,000 miles, as we are going to by a new L/Cruiser there is no point putting a new set on, if we were going to keep the old girl we would stick with the AT2's, better in the wet.
General make both as I said, 265/65x17 and 265/70x17, the original size for L/Cruiser is 265/65x17 but both fit just as well, side walls I think are as good as the BFG AT KO's, all the tyres we sell we like to test to give + or - feed back to the end user, hope this is of help to you.

General AT2 have been mentioned more than once as a good tyre.
I do, like you say, feel a taller sidewall is prefered.
265 x 70 x 17 would lift the LC by maybe half inch at most.
Would you suggest possibly that I should look for 265 x 75 x 17 ?
Good places to get prices for the Generals ?

We did. No idea how they compare to other tyres as we only used BFG ATs but I really rate them.I feel I really should buy the BFG A/T, it's like Andy said, there so damn expensive.
The other good choice for me is the General Grabber AT2
They seem to have good reports, and only some thing like 75% of the price of the BFG.
Perhaps BFG are pricing themselves out of the market, as far as the "man in the street" go's.

i have AT2's on my pajero (mk1 swb). they have been on there for 2 years now, wear is minimal. i can't fault them, on or off road, wet, ice etc. i used to have a problem with back end slip, but not once since i have had these tyres on.
very strongly recomend them.

FFS, don't give them ideas!! 
Hi, i had the general Grabbers on my 3.2 DID Shogun LWB. I used them on and light off road. They were pretty crap and didnt last long.
Next I opted for the BFG's. yes more expensive but tread is about twice as deep and they will get you anywhere.
Road noise isnt any more noisy than the grabbers and i have had them on now for about a year having done about 10k miles and still look new ish....
