In all seriousness a remap for starters. My mates dad has one and theyre slowly tuning it up. He says it made quite a noticable difference, and the next stage after that was an intercooler.
Personally this is why im after something with a great stonking RV8 in it, so i can tune away hapily

I looked into this for my Discovery which shares the same TD5 lump. I phoned the likes of JE and I was basically told that the engine chip upgrade is a one size fits all 'off the shelf' product.
Personally speaking, I would recommend that you drop TD5 Alive a call. The chap I spoke to was very knowledgable and the work he does is all bespoke and based on what performance characteristics you want from the car. The exhaust note from the retuned TD5 is awesome (if not quite as impressive as the V8).
0-60 could come down to just over the 7 second mark for my Disco, so I am guessing around the 8 second mark for your Defender. Mid range Torque is transformed as well. Importantly, the chap at TD5 alive individually tunes each car, so the end result should be a lot better than a simple plug in.

One of my mates has a defender. He has a new larger turbo (unsure what of specifics), varible boost, a very loud dump valve and a new intercooler.
Last year at Santa Pod he drove it up the strip, im at work atm but il post a video link later tonight, this was with the standard turbo but running higher boost and with dump valve.
I think he a 17 second quarter mile, with sounds alot but there is alot of weight to move and the gearing is ideal. I was on the insurance on it for a month; pulled well in 3rd!

You dont say what year this is, I assume a pre 200 tdi engine?If so there isn't a lot you can do.
A chap I know has circa 200bhp and enough toque to stop the world turning in his defender. IIRC his was fettled by twisted which is closest to you.

You dont say what year this is, I assume a pre 200 tdi engine?If so there isn't a lot you can do.
ETA - The description sounds like a 19J, too.

As its a month on and you haven't answered, do you still need help with this?If so, what engine/year is your 90. If it's a Defender then it must be a Tdi or Td5 both good engines. If it's a 2.5TD then you have a Ninety (not a Defender).
I can point you in the right direction for tuning any of them, or other options, just let me know what you have, your epectations and budget (if you have one).

Best bet is to have a look at some people like Twisted Performance or Allisport (use Google to find them).
A ECU re-flash/chip is the first and best mod, it will put the engine to where it should have been from the factory and will improve throttle response as well as a heft gain to hp/torque. They cost about £400 and you'll probably see better mpg.
From there you could go bigger intercooler, free flow exhaust a more radical tune and a VNC turbo. Bell Auto's have just had a bolt on TD5 making over 200hp

What can be done? I think I’m understanding that a simple remap/chip is not possible as it is not a td5, but perhaps a different turbo? Or what?
