Skype and WhatsApp in UAE

Can anyone advise if either of these 2 apps can be used currently in UAE.

Also, what is the situation regarding the use of VPNs. Is there any problem with using one?

Skype works perfectly fine, WhatsApp for messages only,

I think you'll find most expats use a VPN, technically not allowed, but we need to see Eastenders somehow !!

Skype works fine these days on both pc and phone. Whatsapp calls also started working recently.

VPN still under a grey area. Allowed but not allowed if you know what I mean. We have a corporate vpn at work, I use one at home on occasion. There's rules for what is and isn't allowed but basically aimed at people trying to use them for subversion rather than watching the f1 or xhamster
