Hi guys, similar story. I have been tempted by hillclimbing for years and now i think i can afford it. i have a few questions though.

I will be using my daily driver what class would i be in? i have a volvo s40 T4, its 1855cc with the standard turbo. I only have minor mods like exhaust, airfilter, coilovers and stripped interior.

Some idea of costs please, entry fees, safety equipment etc. My closest hills are gurston down and presscott.

What licence do i need to hill climb?

The stripped interior will put you at a huge disavantage as it places you in the modified class. You would be better off replacing the seats, etc, and that would then put you in the roadgoing production class. Your car will carry a 40% cc increase due to it being forced induction and depending upon the championship you enter, this is likely to put you in a class of either over 2600 cc or over 2000 cc. The licence you require is a non-race national B.

The regulations for each of the different series will confirm the right class, but as said above, without the "interior trim" you'll get punted up to the modified class.

Sadly I won't be there, Le Clio threw a hissy today & refused to go any further! Lucky for me others stepped in & saved me, many thanks Steve, Andy, Martin & all the others who offered their help. Shame as she was going better than ever but thats racing I guess! Good luck for tomorrow everybody, I may pop up with the camera for a couple of hours.

As others have said, the stripped interior will put you into Modified Production, but for that category, I believe you need some safety equipment like a rollcage. I'd put a the interior back in and stick with the roadgoing class. You don't need carpets in roadgoing, so it's only really the seats and door trims you need to worry about. You'll need a Nat B non-race licence, which is about £40/year and you can order online at the MSA website. You'll also need a helmet to SNELL 2005 or later, Nomex suit and Nomex gloves to the right standard as a minimum. Hedtec do cheap helmets and Plays Kool Motorsport do cheap suits and gloves.

Costs to compete will be a set of tyres every season or three (depends how many events and how hard your car is on tyres), increased brake pad wear over road use and a bit of fuel. Entry fees are £80-120, depending on the event, but £80 is more common than £120.
