Hi all!

I'm really keen to give an Autotest event a go.

Could anyone recommend a club thats local to Birmingham that puts on/participates in then?

Knutsford and district motor club are a possibility.

If you go on the MSA website you can search for clubs by region, then filter them to see what sort of events they run. It's not always accurate as I'm sure some clubs tick more boxes than they need to on the form. Club websites are often not particularly well run either, so you might need to persevere to get the info you need.

Knutsford is maybe a touch far from Birmingham haha

But thanks for the heads up about the MSA website, found that the Redditch club isnt too far from me!

Look at Loughborough Car Club as they run both a summer grass series and also a very successful Winter series at Donington Park.

A friend of mine did an autotest recently at Curborough, near Lichfield. Think it was run by http://www.owenmotoringclub.co.uk/autotests

I participated in an entertaining autotest at Curborough a few weeks back organised by Will Barnes and Cannock and District Car Club.

I'm sure there's another one very soon but their website is not updated.

You will need to travel to get the best from the sport.

Fair point, but I'm in a bit of an awkward catch 22 though... I'm too young to legally trailer things and my car is too noisy and uncomfortable for long distance travel on the motorway haha

yeah I can understand that, Ear Plugs....... smile

Mind you if it really is noisy you won't make many friends among the scrutineers.

Throckmorton is a very good venue by the way, been there a few times.

Am I allowed to hijack this thread?

Just moved to south Leicestershire and me and my friend want to do some cheap motorsport.

Anything from sprints, autosolos and targets rally really. Had a look at the Donington and Curborough ones, which I can do in my mg (guessing they're not top aggressive on the car?)
But we would probably prepare a 318 compact or something like that for more competitive stuff.

Does anyone have any suggestions or tips?

Have a look at Targa or road rallying can't get more bangs for your buck than those formats. Knutsford MC have a Targa mid September........ He says pushing the wrong event..... it clashes with the Colman Tyres rally which I'm running in Yorkshire!

Thanks guys!

Did my first event last weekend, an autosolo at Rockingham with the peterborough MC. Finished 4th in class (2 seconds behind 3rd, drat) and me and my mate had a great time! Already have two more booked so the bug has bitten!

Marshalled today for the loughborough car club autotest and was told all about the autosolo winter series, so will be doing that aswell.

Ofcourse these weren't enough so now my friend and I have bought a very common and well known car for targa rallying:

nuts

Now, I know some of you do targas so...what do we now need?

So far we're thinking:
Fire extinguiher
Sump guard (sheet of 4mm ally)
Cut off switch
Spare wheels and tyres (whats the best tyres to use durability wise?)
Spotlights
Seats and harnesses??
Some sort of roll protection?

Also, whats the minimum we can get away with insurance/tax wise? We're both in our early twenties so a full year of insurance is out of the question, but my friend does have a towing licence and a range rover so we can trailer her... Cant stress enough how cheap we want to run for..

You will need at least third party insurance for Targa. On event insurance can be bought at the time which covers the road sections but you still need your own cover as part of the agreement.

What you have mentioned will get you under way and in time you will want to add other things.

I'd hang back with Tyres for now MSA are changing the rules for 2018, but as yet it is not clear what will it won't be allowed. Also bear in mind certain events will limit the use of Knobblies so you will need a back up plan of ordinary road tyres.

You will soon be sucked in to Road Rallying too...... wink

Having been active at the University Motorclub I joined Loughborough Car Club and have had a lot of fun at their events, evening grass autotests, autosolos, donnington series etc in both the Westfield and E36 comoacy. As as well as national autosolos and then autotest with the BTRDA in the kitcar.

Richard Egger is very motivated to run a good club and promote motorsport. Jess of GoMotorsport is also ex Lboro Uni and a LoCC member.
