2018 UK Targa/Road Rallying Thread
Discussion
Regs are out for some of the upcoming NESCRO Targas. The William Paterson Memorial Targa Rally, the same day as the Ilkley targa, 3rd June, the Shaw trophy 10th June and the Lake district Classic 24th June. All three have a classes for classics and can get waivers if you have too many cylinders, carb chokes or cams if you get your entry in early enough.
Got to limit the outings pre Julye as the young Nav has exams.
The trumpet TR7 is undergoing some pre MOT work but fired up ok after 5 months of resting since the Solway last year. Kept my eye in with some autotests though in the wrong wheel drive Citroen.
Wingo.

Bev and Niall retired first day
Russ and Sam had electrical issues second day.
Looks like Twitch and Sambo dropped out after second Petrol last night.
Can’t figure out what happened to Rich and Andy, but they were seventh after last Petrol, but didn’t finish.
Nick and Henry finished..... last!.

Back to the 12-car rallies this weekend - Guildford MC's Jedi on Friday 4th May. May the 4th....Jedi....geddit?
Anyway, the wee Suzuki is still causing me problems so I've taken the brave move of borrowing my wife's rather new Mini Cooper.......
An enjoyable night, but not fantastic result.Anyway, the wee Suzuki is still causing me problems so I've taken the brave move of borrowing my wife's rather new Mini Cooper.......
Even as beginners, we decided to ask for the Novice clues to pre-plot - we got 1/2 hour before the rally to solve them and managed the first 7 (of 10) sections. Mo the Nav, plotting clues for the first time, got all of them right (we checked after the rally). Unfortunately he suffered from Mal de Nav, so we had a few breaks, slowed a lot and cut & run a few sections. I took over plotting for the last 3 sections and managed to f**k one up! So with all that, we were well and truly last but we got all the controls and finish inside OTL.
Well done to Guildford MC on a brilliant route, using bits of Surrey I would have thought well well off the PR-acceptable list.
Next event for me is the Ilkley Targa, I *think* I've now fixed the Suzuki but you never know....
cheers

The Jedi was a good event, we had a pretty good run round with only one missed board. There are some interesting lanes in that part of Surrey.Even as beginners, we decided to ask for the Novice clues to pre-plot - we got 1/2 hour before the rally to solve them and managed the first 7 (of 10) sections. We’ve just about recovered from the weekend - this grubby wee beast served us well on the Ilkley Targa and didn’t miss a beat.
I think we finished 36th oa from 50+ starters and 44 finishers. We’d have a higher placing but took a few wrong tests in the morning as we found out what a Targa rally was all about. Particularly the navigator getting bounced around and not being able to read the map!
We did this proper grass-roots style, a £400 standard car apart from a light duty sumpguard, drove her 250 miles to the rally and back and competed on road tyres. She’s now parked in my suburban Surrey street, sullying the ambiance with the aroma of silage and the look of a rural getaway car.

Great stuff thepawnbroon. That's what it's all about
Kemble targa this weekend. Hoping for some rain so we can try and keep up the more powerful cars in the plucky micra... Its never been competitive on grippy surfaces.
Good luck! Is that with restricted tyre choice? I think some had an advantage on the wet muddy bits of Ilkley, running forest tyres. Every event is different and I'm happy to slide around...Kemble targa this weekend. Hoping for some rain so we can try and keep up the more powerful cars in the plucky micra... Good to see you up in Yorkshire Pawnbroom, I didn’t get chance to say hello, but I’m glad you enjoyed yourselves.
The event seemed to go quite well, just a few issues with the feeding arrangements.
I also had to pacify a policeman at T1, but he seemed ok. A bloke wanted to park his crane across the end of the last test too, I never did find out what happened there as I was looking after the Gun Club Test in the afternoon.
Not sure if you noticed but we had a celebrity crew out. The legendary pairing of Ron Beecroft and John Millington, double motoring new champions together for an event for the first time in eighteen years. Pretty sure it won’t be the last either. Ron was as spectacular as ever!, I think it was him that left the 75ft skidmark on the entry to the last corner at gun club!.

I think the Gun Club was my favourite test! It was almost like a closed public road stage in Belgium with a wee bit grass. They were all good, Philiskirks was real bumpy but fun to drive. We got a bit lost on Sherburn first time round, and saw 85mph on the speedo.
Yes it was an honour to share the event with Ron and John, big heroes of mine from when Ron won Mull with Mike Kidd then came back for the non-closed road event in 1988 with his wife navigating.
Many thanks to you and all the team

Sherburn is always fast, I remember when we used it on the Yorkshire revival back in 2009, I had the Alfa up into three figures and passed an Escort going the opposite way the other side of a few cones doing a similar speed, it focused your mind a bit!. Especially when the tarmac suddenly stopped and we were on gravel!. I’ve been round there in the dark too, that is alarming !.
I’ve suggested to joe it gets split into two tests next year, to cut out the long straights.
Gun club is cracking test too.
