I am about to sit my ARDS test and being over 45 realise the medical is a little more onerous
Having failed so far to find the answer 'googling' thought I would pose the question here

For the National B Race Licence would I require to have an ECG test, if so is that just the '12 lead test' or also the Stress ECG test, I can only find the latter mentioned for an Intewrnational Licence so think that is probably not required.
I will clarify from the MSA tomorrow but thought I ask here first

For Nat B and A, just the £50 medical. very Basic. If you do it now and renew licence in 2019 before that date , it is valid for this and next years licence.

Yep quite right, no need for an ECG - stress (exercise) or otherwise - if you are applying for a National B. The ECG business is only for over 45's applying for Int'l Licences.

It's a fairly basic medical that you need, similar to the medical we do for HGV drivers - definitely not "onerous" - but it has to be done by a registered (GMC) medical practitioner. There is no fixed fee so it depends on the provider, anywhere between "buy me a beer " (unusual these days) and somewhere touching £180 depending on who you know..

As above - no such thing really, there is no fixed fee.

However there is a means whereby you might get such a thing at that sort of money. Most GPs are too busy to undertake any non-GMS (i.e. private) work - especially HGV/PCV/RACMSA medicals, so they tend to quote between £120 and £180 for this 15 minute medical in the knowledge that most drivers will do a U turn and look elsewhere. Obviously your own GP is under no obligation to provide you with what is a non NHS service.

Perhaps as a consequence of this several independent companies have sprung up on line and will charge between £50 and £70 for a D4 (HGV) medical. If you contact them you should find that most of them will also do RACMSA/ACU medicals for the same price. If you go down this route just double check that the Dr. has filled the form in correctly (they may be unfamiliar with the form) - otherwise the MSA will bounce it.

If you are in the South East there is always Motor Racing Medics near Gatwick who will sort you out (no connection obviously..)

Depending on your location there is a very good private GP practice in Salisbury that do them. Static 12 lead, not Stress ECG (Porsche Drivers Centre at Silverstone for that).

....... should anyone around the North-West require a medical, I can arrange for them to be done in the evening, £40, and anyone in the North East, £50. PM me if it is of interest.

For those in the Midlands, The Motorsports School (based at Mallory Park, but operating at several locations inc Mallory and Rockingham) often arrange medicals.

I passed ARDS Nat B medical in Feb, you'd have to be in horrible shape to fail - the work part was being stood in a queue to see the doc holding a cup of (your own) wee.

As usual, I should have come to the forum days ago.
I'm booked on an ARDS test at C Combe and while I'm no Fangio, I would like to think I can handle the driving bit. The written test will be daunting I expect, especially the flag recognition as I always get in a muddle, but that's all fair enough.
What pi**es me off is the hassle to get a simple medical. Anyone would think I was being vetted to go to the so**ing moon.
As mentioned above, for some wierd reason our NHS practice won't take money for some private work, yet claims to be hard up .... just like they don't now do foreign travel stuff which people used to pay for.
So, we're left to fend for ourselves. I have been looking all over the place for a medical.
The MSA were only half helpful, providing a list for the UK with about 10 doctors on.I called one and was told he doesn't do them.
Having reached desperation I got onto this forum and as usual, Hey Presto!
I'm booking at a suitable clinic via gettingamedical.co.uk
So, thanks for all your help guys - and you've probably saved me a few £ too!

You only need the stress related ecg for international c and above, its not that onerous, just some cycling on a indoor cycle machine at different resistances whilst they monitor your heart rate etc. Takes about 45 mins. The Porsche centre at Silverstone do them for about £200 and they are very helpful.

The medical for National B/A can be done by any Doctor, basically look at the race application form and it shows you what you need to be checked. Its an eye test, urine check and blood pressure, height and weight, the Doctor needs to sign the application. Shouldn't take more than 20 mins to do.

You would need to be pretty un-well or very unfit or very over weight to fail either!!!!
