South West is a big centre for speed events sadly, great for people that live there and in the area, but you do get the impression it is never likely to move out of there.

I lived for years in Lincolnshire, nowhere near a speed event location of any note, so no great shock I never watch it much.

Just a shame that these events could not happen more centrally, open them out to people who might ahve never seen them.
Believe it or not if people want to see an event then they are usually willing to travel to see it. If (big If) an event is too far away from me, I don't moan that it's to far away.

I realised from an early age that the world doesn't actually revolve around me, maybe you should do it too and let others get on with there lives.

I simply said it would be nice if it were closer for the vast majority, did I say it was because I couldnt be arsed to drive 12 hours to get there?

No, so don't put words into my mouth thanks.

Imagine if it was near Birmingham for instance? or perhaps you would prefer Shetland

laugh

There are some terrific cars entered for this event. Hopefully it won't be too long till the final entry list is released but the available spots filled up pretty quickly despite being on a par with travelling to the moon evidently.

No issue with the event being where it is.

More that if an event like this was planned in the future, wouldn't it be nice if it was in a place where most could go and see it?

I get that this sort of racing is popular down there, and perhaps it is easier to get the approval down there.

Likely to be down to the topography more than anything.

There is a distinct lack of circuits round here (3+hours to Castle Coombe or Thruxton): probably helps interest in hill climbs, sprints and the like.

There has also been the Shere hillclimb in Surrey going for just a few years.

It's not competitive and apparently drivers are supposed to keep to the speed limit.

Some of the drivers might have forgotten the last bit.

Apparently a cyclist demanded his right to use the road during the closure ,they suspended for 5 minutes just for him.

Parking top and bottom
Restaurants, cafes and dog friendly beach.
Airport not too far away (and roads down here no way near as bad as they were 20 years ago).

Good road surface and super steep.

View from the holiday house we are staying in.

There are plenty of motorsport events based in the midlands of UK most tracks for a starter. Its good that there are more events outside the midlands where other parts of the country can enjoy motorsport. Also great for a new event to be sold out. Despite all the doom and gloom motorsport In the UK is still healthy and at least there are some council willing too create new events with organisiation from car clubs rather than bending over too local nimbys.

As previously mentioned in response to you Chunder - events will be where there are hills - and you moaned that allt he events were in the South West.

So I put it to you again:

Shelsley Walsh, Worcestershire - 35 miles and 55 minutes from the centre of Birmingham

Loton Park, Shropshire - 58 miles and 1 hour 5 minutes from the centre of Birmingham.

Prescott, Gloucestershire - 50 miles and 1 hour from the centre of Birmingham.

All of which in the last 3 years have featured cars such as:

and

All available near Birmingham....

In fact if you go to Shelsley this weekend, you may even see this*:

  • static only, but it takes a lot of guys to run it and Williams only have so many bodies spare on a GP weekend.

I've been involved in closed road rallying for a number of years and I wish the organisers, marshals, competitors and the local community every success in this event.

I was a marshal on England's first closed road rally earlier this year and will be helping out on Epynt this weekend.

If we could all get behind this type of motorsport and expand the available events/venues then there wouldn't be a reason to winge about travelling.

Chunder - how about you get your local motor club to organise something? or maybe even go for your CoC ticket and run an event yourself?

I'm doing an event at Shelsey next month. It's 239 miles away and about 4 hours but well worth the effort. Admittedly I'll have a numb arse by the time I get there but I don't trailer my E30. smile

I am both ecstatic and gutted about this event.

Me and some friends go to Watergate bay to surf nearly every year and that hill is always a fun challenge!

I have a modified Eunos and once I saw this event was on, I decided it would be the perfect competitive challenge for me and the car.

except;

Its my girlfriends bloody birthday that weekend and our Eurotunnel booking and hotel in Brugges are totally non-refundable! furious

So I hope it is a huge success and I shall enter next year. Oh and i'd be coming from South East Kent. But, you cant always have the best things on your doorstep, i'm spoiled with Brands Hatch anyway wink

Good luck to all competing, please post photos here after.
