I've been looking online but struggling to find a number background (33x48cm), white with a black border for putting on a white car as per J.4.1.1 in the 2018 blue book.

I might just be looking in the incorrect places if someone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated smile

Thanks,

Dunc.

Can you not just put the numbers directly on the car then make a border of the appropriate size with black tape?

I use a couple of magnetic panels for each side of the car - approx. £10.00 for the pair from local Signs Express shop (easy to prepare before an event and to fit if inclement weather):

Of course, suitable if your door panels are metal wink

Hi Carl, I had considered that but thought there might be something off the shelf, cheers though.

Reese, thanks for the suggestion but no metal panels or doors biggrin Also I see yours doesn't have the black border as per the blue book, most likely it's not that important and I'm probably worrying about nothing!

Thanks for the responses, appreciated,

Dunc.

Edit - Just measured the side of the car, the standard size won't even fit, guess it's just a case of doing the best you can smile

Scrutineers had no issues with this.

Well, you live and learn! Just read that portion and am astonished, never spotted it before nor had my attention drawn to it!

I have bought 20x A4 size thin plastic sheets that I have stuck 1 each of the correct size numbers to, twice times 0-9 and attach them to the car (a Sprint Car (Dolomite Sprint)) using white or black tape. Having done multiple Sprints and Hill climbs this year, no Scrutineers or anyone else has pointed out anything untoward.
It's proved to be cheap and reliable and the numbers are reusable meaning I don't have to keep buying new numbers as they're not destroyed when being taken off the car after the event smile
Think what you've got there is absolutely fine - I would be amazed if anyone pulled you up on it.....

Assume you have tried the usual Demon Theives, Rallynuts and Merlin Motorsport etc?

Could you not move to the yellow window numbers as per most championships?

Any decent sign company will be able to knock you one up for minimal £

Who by just in case anyone else manages to stumble across the thread (there might also be the possibility of me racing a white car in the foreseeable)

My solution might not be very helpful to anyone else but since the full size square is too high to fit on my car I've fitted the 9 inch numbers onto the side pod and used black tape to denote the sides of the box.

If it wasn't for the height restriction I would have used the ebay link posted above. Looks like it would be spot on for road based cars.

Cheers

The rules are different for sprints and hillclimbs -- basically as long as the timekeepers can identify the car pretty much anything goes. I stick white numbers on to the rear windows.

Talking to a Scrutineer a while ago and he was saying how he though the Blue book should be torn up and started again and re-writing it in a commonsense way so that it was clear to read....don't think it'll happen any time soon!

Personally I find the BB clear when it comes to racing numbers. Problem is most scrutineers aren't that bothered about the numbers so all sorts of variations end up on track. With the time they have scrutineers naturally focus on the safety aspects.

The BB clearly states that yellow window numbers are only allowed if the series regulations says they can be used. None of the series I race in have that in the regs yet 3/4's of the grid have those numbers and most of those in the wrong sizes/stroke width.

Scrutineer here
Are we bothered about numbers? – If we spot them as wrong – we’ll mention it.
Do we expect the competitor to actually do anything about it? – Not really.
As I’ve said elsewhere – we get 6 minutes to check a car…
There are so many cars that get presented with safety issues week in week out, usually it’s the same cars too, that to clamp down and only let cars out that completely conform to the Blue Book, in some championships at least half the grid would go home. Although it’s the clerk that has the final say on that- not us.
As for ripping up the Blue Book and starting again- I’ll vote for that - parts of it are dire. Mind you - many championships regs are dire too.

The numbers on a car are to help the marshals do their job from gridding up to post observers. Do you really want to make their job more frustrating or difficult?

Anyone looking for argument I guess?
