Hi all

I help run the Porsche Enthusiasts Club in the East Mids and I’ve been fancying the idea of organising a small, low key regularity event for local members.

The trouble is, I’ve got no idea how to do it! It would most likely be for 10-15 cars, over 2-3 hours, in the Nottingham / Leicester area.

Has anyone got any advice? Do I need some kind of MSA permit? Do I need to notify the authorities in any way?

I’m just trying to get my head around how complex it would be to arrange or whether I’m biting off more than I can chew for a small club with only a handful of volunteers.

Any advice or direction to resources would be massively appreciated!

I would contact Motorsport UK, explain what you intend to do and take it from there.

Hi,

Events like that need to be organised under the auspices of a Motorsport UK recognised club. So I would suggest getting in touch with one near you and discussing. The East Midlands Association of Motor Clubs is a good place to start.

Good luck! Let us know how you get on.

I can't help feeling that a regularity over three hours isn't going to be very challenging.

"The Motor Vehicles (Competitions and Trials) Regulations 1969 (as amended) require that any motoring event which utilises the Public Highway is subject to Authorisation under the legislation. The Department for Transport has authorised The Royal Automobile Club Motor Sports Association Ltd to undertake Authorisation in England and Wales. Under this legislation, the Royal Automobile Club Motor Sports Association Ltd is the sole authorising body for competitions & trials on the public highway. This Authorisation is handled by the Competition Authorisation Office (CAO). This function in Scotland is undertaken by the Royal Scottish Automobile Club."

Some guidelines and faqs here.

Insurance should also be a consideration, both for the organising club and the competitors.

Is the Porsche Enthusiasts club an affiliated MSA club?, or is there a different Porsche club that is?
As you will have seen in the posts above, the law states that a run or rally which has any sort of timing at all, on the public road, must be authorised by MSUk which means it has to be run under the auspices of an MSA club.

If you could get an MSUK club to help, you would almost certainly need to run it as a 12 Car Rally, any more cars and you would need to go through the full authorisation process, with PR visits and letters to residents on route.

A 12 Car is much easier to do though and would be quite enjoyable for your members I expect. Be aware the maximum allowed average speed is 30mph, probably less if it’s daylight and on narrow roads. It’s about accuracy and consistency not speed. You would also need a gang of marshals to man controls for the timing, unless you could get one of these relatively new electronic systems to work. ( I’ve never seen it tried in the UK yet, but it does exist).

Thanks for the advice everyone- much appreciated.

We’re not affiliated to the MSA. The idea about contacting local MSA clubs is a good one. I’ll look a few up and see whether we can get together to organise something.

Loughborough is bang in the middle of that: http://loughboroughcarclub.co.uk/

The measham rally actually runs out of Bruntingthorpe south of leicester a few miles south but the VSCC may be able to offer pointers: https://www.vscc.co.uk/search?q=measham

Good luck getting anything out of the VSCC, bit of secret society those guys.

To be fair it’s going to be quite difficult to get any club to put there name and reputation to someone else’s event. I know we did it once at IDMC, but we had full control over it and due to the nature of the competitors ( high end vintage cars) we made some good money for the club funds.

Matlock & District Motor Club do lots of these type of events (or used to), they might be good for help or advice. I used to be a member, up until a couple of years ago, they were a very active club indeed.

Having marshalled some of their events...i know what you mean!
I was thinking more in terms of either group offering suggestions as to routes/ contacts but they might not want to risk buring either by letting an unknown group in on their hard won knowledge!
