For what it's worth, I've only done Gurston once and did a 41.8 in my bog-standard 172 Cup (on List 1A tyres).

The onboard video looks fairly sedate, so I reckon it could go a second faster with more practice and a bigger brave pill for Hollow. Let's say 40.5s with stickier tyres, and that looks mid-class in A2 on a typical day.
Yep, sounds about right. In the Civic I managed a 40.78 back in the summer, that was standard power but on Yoko Ad08s. Standard power Civic falls off vtec too much in the middle bit and better tyres would make a good difference. Some of the nicely prepared stuff is a decent bit faster.

How about the MX5 class at Gurston, as you mentioned that as one of your options. Cars are limited to the modifications you can make so it doesn’t mean you have to spend loads to be competitive - just buy the right mode to start with.

That's a good call.

Your profile doesn't say where you are but I assume you're south if you're talking about Gurston.

As another option, I run the Bristol Motor Club MX5 Challenge which is a championship that is designed to keep costs sensible by preventing people spending a fortune with the engine mod arms race.
Buy an mk2 MX5, fit some coil overs on it and compete. The championship covers 4 Autosolos, 4 Sprints and 4 Hill Climbs (albeit two weekends at the same venue). You don't have to do all the rounds and just 7 rounds count towards the championship.

We're also officially the only motorsport championship that can be settled with Roshambo as a tie-breaker wink

www.mx5challenge.co.uk

Last years rounds were:
Date Event
23rd March 2019 Great Western Sprint, Castle Combe
7th April 2019 Kemble Autosolo
11th May 2019 Llandow Sprin
19th May 2019 Westonzoyland Autosolo
8th June 2019 Manor Farm Hill Climb
9th June 2019 Manor Farm Hill Climb
21st July 2019 Clay Pigeon Sprint
27th July 2019 Dick Mayo Sprint, Castle Combe
4th August 2019 Kemble Autosolo
15th September 2019 Westonzoyland Autosolo
28th September 2019 Manor Farm Hill Climb
29th September 2019 Manor Farm Hill Climb

That’s very interesting, however I’m on the Hampshire/Berkshire border so it’s a bit further than I’d ideally like to travel, however I might visit Castle Coombe next year to have a look at your sprint day.

Just to update this… I finally returned to Gurston in my Clio last weekend, took that massive brave pill, and worked down to a quickest run of 40.70s. That’s a bog-standard 172 Cup on Michelin PS3s.

Did the OP get a Clio?

That's a very decent time, and shows how much can be gained with a bit of practice. Gurston conditions were perfect at the weekend. I was hoping for my first sub 40 run, and ended up on a 38.95.. and a third in 2l class. Very pleased!

It was one of the most enjoyable hillclimb or sprint weekends I've had in ages. I'd forgotten how good a venue Gurston is - a fabulous hill in a beautiful setting. Loved every minute, and looking forward to returning a bit more often in the future.

Agreed, it was a great event and very well run (couple of issues on Sunday were sorted and nothing ran late). Really nice to have spectators back as well.
