I'm looking for a track academy, with say a couple of days structured training, leading to the ARDS, where they provide the car, RWD and a proper clutch, ideally. Silverstone isn't operating, and MSV want you to bring your own car it looks like. I'm not in a position to store a car yet, but will do later if I like it! Any recommendations?

What outcome are you looking to achieve? Because if it’s simply the race licence, you will pass the ARDS at the first attempt with no prior training or preparation if you have ever driven a car before and have swotted up on the relevant parts of the blue book, which is included in the ‘go racing’ pack (and also available for free online).

I'm guessing the OP is looking for something like the old Jim Russel Racing School that used to be at Donington, where they actually taught you driving techniques and race craft before getting your race licence, and then had FF1600 school races for the pupils.

Don't know if anything like that exists anymore, probably because the ARDS test is so easy that virtually anyone can get a licence and enter a race with no tuition or preparation, whether they're ready for it or not.

The Castle Combe Racing School is still going, though the website describes it as an 'experience day' and doesn't mention anything about the ARDS test.

HI Spartacus -

Performance Driving Centre at Anglesey have Elises and some Classic FF1600 for use as School cars.

The focus is very much on a structured programme to learn and coach building you into an ARDS test.

Worth speaking to Annette in the circuit office.

Pembrey also does a driving school and ARDS. From memory they use Porsche Caymans so would meet the OP's requirements of rear wheel drive.

The Welsh venues are a little unavailable at the moment I think, try talking to Pete or Mel at The MotortSports School -

Another vote for the Motorsports School (https://www.themotorsportsschool.co.uk/)

They run out of Mallory Park but will also offer track tuition at many other venues. I am fairly sure that they have MX5 Mk3s available to satisfy the RWD requirement.

I am not aware that they do a two day course, as such, but I am sure they would be able to put a bespoke package together involving tuition and the ARDS course. They are a good outfit and provide top quality tuition/coaching and not just the ARDS course.

Speak to Pete and Mel Edwards - top people.

Hi ,yes that's something we can facilitate at the motorsports school. We can tailor anything you need to suit you.
However we wont take money from you for no reason, I really don't believe you would need 2 days, we can offer either a hours tuition , pre ARDS courses, half a day or a full day to include your ARDS novice driver training course.
We have Mk3 MX5 2.0ltr, for RWD tuition and that will fit your requirements perfectly.
please call Melanie on 01455 502412.
