The latest round of the Weald MC Series took place last Friday, run by Southern Car Club and based in Tandridge. It was a tricky night again for us - we suffered a hold up from an indignant resident then stopped to tow another competitor out of a muddy ditch. All that meant we had to cut some of the route to ensure a finish, which we got in 9th o/a and 2nd Expert.

I revisiting part of the route the following day, as I was in the area - this is a "yellow" - lots of similarly tricky lanes down here just off the M25.

A few photos...

Next is The Preston - I will be attending this legendary navigational rally on Saturday night for the first time. Marshalling this year with an eye on competing next. It seems it's the toughest, muddiest (or icy this year), car breaking road rally around! Anybody got experience?

Not personally but yes it is the roughest rally in the country by far from what I’ve heard. Don’t expect to come out without damage.

I took part in 2017, my first road rally.
Our near standard Micra survived the onslaught, apart from the exhaust falling off and spotlights failing. The navigation and boards weren't too tricky but I think having a novice navigatior counted against us when it came to picking the right line to not get stuck, we missed so much time getting stuck (and pulling an MR2 out of a hedge) that when we got the last three tests the marshalls had already gone back to base so had to crawl through them to get back.

It's definitely worth doing, but guard up, pick the best tyres you're allowed by the regs and just try and survive the first time, they tend to reuse some sections between years so you need to build up experience, can't do that if you retire on test 1.

Well, we had a great time marshalling on the Preston. It was a really cold night, -7 deg C most of the time. The section we were on was mainly frozen dirt with a few deep icy puddles. From what I hear there was a higher finishing rate than normal due to the reduction of deep mud and water.

But it certainly looked like a tough old rally. It was so cold I didnt get any decent photos, but here's a couple.

I finished 3rd navigating about 18 years ago, the car was a standard Golf GTI save for some Maxsports, lights, and sump guard. I think I have a picture in the loft, will try and dig it out over Christmas. The following year I navigated for someone else but 2-miles in a CV joint snapped. I do remember a great atmosphere at the start in Barton Mills and lots of camaraderie at both fuel halts, to help people fix all sorts of stuff hanging off!
