Thanks all. I plan to get together with the fellow who serviced my Porsche 930 (it only had 10K miles when I purchased it 3 years ago, and was essentially factory new but I sold it to provide the funds and garage space for the Ultima; a no-brainer for my tastes) so he can be sure of the exact transmission details and come up with a plan of attack. Much as I don't want to spend too much right now, it seems like I should look a three things: ring/pinion if possible; LSD install; shaft cover plate (or whatever it's called) to provide more strength to the housing. If there is no ring/pinion option, I may just consider stretching 6th to be a bit longer.

I have a Quaife limited slip in my G50-3 and I am very pleased with its preformance. Unlike the statement above that said his car tended to step out a bit, mine doesn't. When it breaks traction it does a outstanding job of staying in a straight line which makes correcting the issue really easy, just back up a little bit on the throotle and order is restored. I have had cars that would step out when they broke loose and it always seemed to be a bit of a challenge to let off the gas in a manner that didn't load up the front axel and then spit the car in what ever direction the front wheels where pointed. ok, hello to all. i am a porsche g50 guru. the g5050 and g5052 5speed boxes are going to be the best suited for v8 gearing applications stock out of the box. the 993 6speed is lower geared and not useful in many gears for v8's. the g5050 and g5052 are turbo gearboxes and have forged internals. they also have larger ring and pinions. although the non turbo boxes will take v8 abuse all day long too, just not preferable gearing. if you want the best v8 gearing there are several ways, cheapest is find a g5005 from a rs america 964 with the 9tooth pinion and 30tooth ring gear, 3.33. then get the internal gears 2nd thru 5th from a g5050 or a g5052, same gearsets in both turbo boxes. install with the g5005 ring and pinion and you have a 217.62mph box with porsche internals at 7500rpm's on 26" tires. theoretical calculations without wind drag of coarse. the second way is to buy an albins 3.10 ring and pinion and install in any g50. the ablins ring and pinion is 2850.00 plus installation costs into an existing gearbox. so a used g50 non turbo is around 4-5grand, lsd 2grand, labor 2grand, other "while im in it parts" 2grand, around 11grand total. if you go the albins route, 14 grand. or if you start with the g5050/52 its between 8-12grand for a used one. there is of coarse the mendeola's as well, but expect 12-20 grand out of the box with no mods. happy motoring to all, hope this helps.

what about the newer 996 and 997 turbo boxes, they should be the way to go now, i installed one in my recent built but have not been driving it yet, but they are available at lower prices and should need no mods at all. And according to specs the standard turbo clutch is rated 850nm so a lot cheaper setup than any motorsport setup with double or triple clutch. And you can get the replacement parts from any porsche dealer. A plus is the cable shift over the heavy rod shift of the G50.

I have a standard G5005 in my LS7 and it´s good for exact 190mph (GPS) at 7000upm.
Good for road use and fast acceleration.

I will also go for the 996 TT box solution, albeit without the rear flange

What he said biggrin

I expect there will be crys from people of 1st gear being too short, but I think out of the box, this is really it's only shortfall. Got my vote after all my research, as the least compromised option.

1st gear isn't of much use regardless though, apart from parking. In fact, 3rd to 5th are all you need smile
