Hi All
Hope I'm not intruding here, I'm currently building a GDT70 and I'm sure I read on here somewhere about somebody developing an electronic box of tricks to control direction indicators with push buttons and a timer. I think they were based in the US.
I've tried the search function but doesn't seem to have been working for a while

Try Bruce Fielding on the Ariel Atom Owners Club.
I bought a self cancelling indicator box, loom and switch designed by him, he may have some left, very good quality item.
It has momentary change lane and self canceling after turn and cancel turn.
£125 from memory, but well worth it IMO.

Thanks for all the help that's just what I was looking for.
Now to decide on which one to go for.

While I'm here, I'm sure in the last couple of weeks I've seen an advert/info on a steering wheel with buttons connected via Bluetooth it might not have been on Pistonheads does anyone know about these as this would make the set up complete. I could then control the indicators, horn and dim/main beam all from a removable wheel.

Phil

P. S. Why can others find things via the search function when I spend hours doing so and come up with nothing?

Search facility is carp.
Better to just search with Google which then quite successfully finds PH threads.

Hi Phil,

We GD T70 builders have got to stick together, but it would be good to have a dedicated place on here to do it.

Take a look at CARTEK in Southampton - wireless steering wheel controls, cartekmotorsport.com. Race biased and would need IVA compliant logos on the switches.

Also, lodgesons.co.uk in Cardiff. They have all the technology and say they will do one-off specials.

Best regards,
John McL.

Thanks John
I think that solves the problem and gives me a nice usable set up. Will decide on details like how many buttons and get it ordered so I can start fitting while I wait for further parts from GD.

What number car have you got, are you still building or enjoying using it?

I'm building No29 only started in Aug have panels on and loom pipes in. I'm based in Kent and another one is under way in Surrey, where are you based?

Oh well! just taken the leap and ordered it. Very helpfull guys suggested a second temporary IR reciever should I have trouble with the IVA test. I'm also ordering the SDC controller to give a fully automated system so I cant leave the indicators going

With 8 buttons I have control of
Left Indicator
Right Indicator
Horn
Dim/Main
Flash
and 3 spare any suggestions? was thinking about engine start but I think I'd like that fixed so I can't hit it by accident!

You may have trouble with IVA unless you have the normal buttons and telltales in tandem with the caretek unit, also the placing of the IR reciver is critical, it's pretty useless when already turning the wheel from straight ahead,
I have also got a seperate controller for the indicators so you only need momentary push on the wheel buttons, the indicator control unit gives lane change indication for about four/five flashes for a quick push and about twenty seconds for a push and hold for more than a second, cancel is a second quick push.
Incidently I have indicators on two buttons, horn, headlamp flash, rain light, wash/wipe, boost, and a spare which I may wire to hazards and rain light together.
It would have been nice to have a latching flashing feature on the caretek unit but the flashing feature is momentary hold only frown

Thanks for that Craig. Bit difficult to see in the pic, have you got the IR system and did it pass IVA?

Im tempted to fit dash and steering wheel controls and just cut out dash buttons after test

You will be better off fitting the standard set up for IVA and then fitting the remote set-up.
You will almost certainly fall foul of IVA regs with the IR controls.

Not sure how the IVA tester could fail the IR system if it works during the test.

You will need to look very closely at the wording for each function you put on there. Each control must be identified which idealy would be the correct symbol but could just be a Dymo label. However, sometimes the wording says it must be visible at night in which case the symbol or word has to be illuminated.

Steve, trust me, the system is too hit and miss to chance, also there's no workable way of lighting the wording as you put it, the buttons could be replaced with low watt led buttons I suppose but they would be wholly reliant on the steering wheel battery (which is small)and then you would need to install another switch on the wheel to cut the lights otherwise it would be lit up during the day and even off the car (IYSWIM).
This system is ok generally but you do need the original buttons as back up.

The steering wheel has a bespoke custom rapid prototyped inner with push button controls. The steering wheel is removable.
A simple circuitary device is incorporated in the wiring to control the momantary turn push which lasts approx 5 secs and cancels.
The wiring runs down the steering column to a revolving electrical contact boss so its effectively hard wired.

Works purrfect although i may change the wash/wipe (which is hardly used) to the control panel and swap with either the lift kit button or a map change button.
