I haven't been plugged into Ultimas so please bear with me - most of what I have to say will come as no surprise.
I have just got a ride in Guys Thompsons Ultima - and there is not really a great deal to say which doesn't involve swear words.

It is comfortably the fastest car I have ever ever ever been in. I've never experienced that kind of acceleration EVER - the Lamborghini Murcielago was positively SLOW in comparison - the grunt endless - the torque was GENUINELY gut-wrenching - 5th gear at 2000rpm and the car was taking off like a Tuscan in 2nd- I know my cars and I've ridden and driven (and onced owned) some real quick ones..... BUT THIS...... this was the first time in my life where I have felt a little scared.... this car took the PISS.... beyond words really.

Guy never got the chance to really demonstrate it - just far too much traffic everywhere but the performance (and where I felt it - the grip) is in the land of disbelief - and the brakes are........ well I was up against the harness and he was just touching the middle pedal. It's also the most visceral car I've ever been in - forget the radio... the V8 music was so loud...It makes the stock 550 V12 sound like a Silenced hoover.

Those of you getting one (I understand a few of you have got the first stage of the kit) - hat's off to you.... You've got some serious balls.

What an unbelievable car!!! Shocking!!

Guy - you're a total hero - thanks for absolutely making my day... week....month.......

Manu- that's fantastic! Was on the phone with Ajay earlier so I thought you might post something about this car. So it's a wolf in wolf's clothing; all the stats say this car should be the bollocks and it sounds like it is. Thanks for taking him out Guy, though he'll probably bore the crap out of us for weeks to come (only joking Manu!). Always fancied one of these cars though I don't particularly want to build the sod- well, not drive it afterwards anyway. My hat off to those with the determination to do it too. What's it like in the wet then? Think :bogrolloopstoolate: probably....

Kevin

If you want one the factory will make the car to your spec. In the wet you have to give the car respect as you would do with all powerful rear drive cars but it is easy to handle with a long throttle pedal. More of a problem is the rear wheels floating away but with the level of grip the car still goes. Also, I have Racelogic traction control fitted, saves on tyres and gets you home with little hassle in the wet.

Manu glad you enjoyed it, perhaps you should go for a ride on some better roads with less traffic. It is not speed with these cars (even though they are fast) but acceleration grip and braking.

Well done Bluesatin .... another one taken in by the Ultima sensation! Still taking it a little easy I see

Manu - Glad to see Guy gave you the full experience! I don't think anybody has put it quite so eloquently before.

Can't wait to give mine some pasty when it's finally out on the road! Hopefully a couple of years of race experience will keep it shiny side up too.

Saw a (very nice) bloke with one at last night's PCGB Brands Hatch Trackday. Factory built. Amazingly fast.

I think I might need one - one day. Track days only.

Manu - how do you do it? I mean, what a life you seem to have! Seemingly swanning around in Italian exotica all day and then the odd-foray into GT-renegade territory? You lucky sod, you! I'm lucky if I can roll the Porker out the garage and into the countryside before the vicar notices my absence at evensong, maybe once a fortnight.
Ultima, eh - a friend with a maxxed up R34 told me this was a brain scrambler - sure does sound, well, as you say, visceral. Holy cow, Batman!

I'm with Manu on this one.

The car sounded and looked awesome! And as for raw acceleration it went like a f***ing rocket from what I saw.

Thanks Guy for bringing the Ultima to our office, it truly was a sight! I think our neighbours are putting in double glazing now!

cheers

Did I read somewhere than McLaren used the Ultima as a testbed for the F1's engine? (ie the BMW powerplant).

Is this correct? If so, what happened to these cars? - and has anyone got one?

(apologies - all out of curiosity)

They were called Albert and Alfred if I remember. They were tested to virtual destruction, AFAIK, and probably do not exist today. They were used for testing the Mac F1 powertrain.

I think they used two old Ultima Sports to develop engine cooling, brakes and suspension ( I may be wrong on some of this). They crushed both test mules. I think it had something to do with top spec Ultima's being about a tenth of a Mac

I've just recovered. I'm trying to think of a quicker (and more Brutal car)....
I can't -

I'd love to race the Ultima in the Michelotto F40 at Talacrest, just to see how quick it really is from the outside.

You can find more information and picture on Mclaren's Ultima Sports test car known as "Albert" on www.ultimacars.com.

First off excellant review. It gets me excited.

Stealth B6 Sport at www.stealthcars.com

Hopefully these people are still in business I havn't heard much about them lately except their car in GT racing. I'm still dreaming of a PH test drive. My impression is that it is really no more brutal but has some performance refinements. Visually I like the looks better.(Speed is what counts in my book Ultimatly.) The Hewland gearbox turns it into a real beast and is largly what makes it cost more. The B6 seems like a logical alternative to the GT2 and Modena 360 if a person is interested in trackday attributes and not just prestige.(Or whatever reason people buy Porkers and Ferraris)

A few points that come to mind. First of these is that there are hundreds of Ultima's on road and circuit. I am not against compertition but I have never heard or seen a Sxxxxx on the road. I also believe that the car mentioned is very much a copy of an Ultima with addition at a lot extra cost. Regarding the Hewland. Using this gearbox requires a lot of expense and rebuild cost. I intend to use mine for road and track and do approx 5k miles a year. I doubt the Hewland would siut this use. I could of course use a Q??? that does a transaxle, but I some people have said that these are not that reliable. I will stick to my setup and see how it runs, at the end of the day I go shopping in this car!!

I'm certainly not questioning your setup. The Ultima rules!

Like you point out there are some questions regarding the Stealth but none of which make it less "brutal" or visceral which is really what I'm talking about not actually living with the car. They are very simular cars. In the Evo article on the webpage it mentions that the stealth designer used to race Ultimas and like you say basically copied the design but made some changes. Oh yeah and the B6 is made to pass SVA.

I look forward to more 1st time Ultima experiences and I promise I wont mention Sxxxxxx again.

Don't get me wrong. I just love my Ultima. The only problem now that I have built the car is that it needs more power. Still makes me laugh every time I use it-- best buy you can ever make. So when are you going for yours PiB?

just mentioning the stealth b6, saw Bob Light piloting his at coombe a few times, f**k me! My brother & I were stood open mouthed, the speed this thing has along the straights & through corners is unreal.
For you guys that use b6's & Ultima's on the roads, you have far bigger balls than most!
My cerbera seems like an mpv in comparison.
Darren.
