I have a 6 speed G97 transaxle Im fitting to the SBC adapter plate. I have tried numerous times to get it to fit with no results.

I made sure I had the clutch facing the right direction , added the grease to the transaxle shaft.

I pre fit the Sachs clutch on the spline of the trans axle... it fit

I mounted clutch with the alignment tool

it lines up nicely with the two fixed studs I can feel the tip of the transaxle spine touch the clutch but it won't go in.

I backed off and gave the flywheel a slight turn, tried again no luck

We then took the the clutch off and tried fitting the case alone to the adapter plate and it fit up nicely.

Clutch pre fit again , mounted again, but it just won't go on

Any tips or suggestions?

Don't pull it in using bolts or studs. If you jiggle it around gently then it should drop into place eventually. Some of these jobs can be a real pita and taking time out is defo the way to go.

If it's out of alignment by even a tiny amount it won't slide in. Have you got an assistant who can check the height and angle from different positions?

Yes

When we pre fit the case I took angle measurements on both the engine and the trans axle while the unit was together.

Thinking that if I duplicate those angles it might make it easier to slide in.

still no luck

I ran a camera into the trans axle, it looks lined up, do you think maybe the clutch fork is preventing it?

to get my G40 all the way in I usually have to 'jiggle' the back of the box a fair bit for it to engage properly.... Box moves a good inch or so at the back and then plop... goes right in.

I think it more likely the clutch is not aligned perfectly.
It may be worth refitting the clutch plate with it only lightly secured and see if it will align itself as you fit the box.

But at some point you have to tighten down the bolts and try it the way I am now, we did prefit the transaxle to the adapter plate and it lined up perfectly.

I had exactly this issue fitting my G50 and it turned out to have been supplied by the factory with the wrong (too long) guide tube. A quick change to the right part and the transaxle slipped right into place.

I had the same as Corsair - Do G97 have different length guide tubes across variants? May be worth putting wax or similar on and see if you get a witness mark

If you look at the picture I took of the spline trying to align with the clutch I don't think the clutch tube is involved

When you guys installed yours did it take two people to push it in? or were you able to do it by yourself?

I have the box on a sling at the same angle as the engine, I know they are at the same angle because I took measurements of both when I installed the transaxle without the clutch.

You haven't put the pin in the clutch fork before fitting the transaxle have you?

You have to 'hang' the clutch fork (with an elastic band in my case) in position and then fit the pin once the transaxle is bolted to the adaptor plate.

It's very frustrating, I might just pull the whole engine out and pre fit it. but that means I will have to build a special stand for the engine that doesn't use the threaded holes on the end of the engine case.

you could also try rotating the input shaft while offering it up? stick it in a high gear (4th/5th) and grab both drive shaft flanges and rotate until something it locates?

Thanks I did and I also used a bar and carefully rotated the flywheel

Could you try this, if only to prove that the box will slide home.

Also, the box may need an initial shove followed by some more shove to slide it home but once it's slid in a few mm's you'll know that it's on it's way.
