BTW, I noticed a couple of cars using the ford wiper/lights/indicator stalks. I'm about to buy a set for my GTR, but have one question:

Do I need to extend the steering column in order to get enough room between the dash and the steering wheel for the stalks? Are there any SVA rules I need to keep in mind when fitting the stalks? (damn, that was 2 questions!)

Cheers,
Andrew.
Hi Andrew - simple answer, yes you will. You'll need about 30-40mm IIRC depending on your setup. Should be no SVA issues (they are type approved in a Ford after all). I think you just need a crush mount for the steering wheel for SVA.
We did things slightly differently. To me the question was, recess the back of the slalk housing into the dash (hense that strange cut out in the dash that you see at the top of the thread) or cut and shut a major mechanical component......

....I don't to welding, so recess it was!

The back of the stalks bolts to the upper S/C bush mount.

Are those standard Ultima dials in a custom binnacle?? Looks good!
Yep. Std Ultima instruments, just located in a position where you can see 'em with out taking your eyes of the road.

My bad - Lucky's right, you can do it this way too. That said, my stalks were also recessed into the dash and I still had to extend the steering column - BUT - this is because I was using the Stack dash pod which extends quite a way behond the dash and I had insufficient room between the bottom of it and the steering column shaft to recess the stalks any further (sorry this isn't the easiest thing to explain in words smile

If you used a binnacle like Lucky's, or put in a Stack higher up (would look ugly this way though IMHO), you can get away with not using a longer column. Of course, the same goes if you use the 'standard' central binnacle position which leaves loads of room for stalks etc. around the steering shaft.

Thanks Simon,

Will get some decent pics of the car up once it's back and polished etc but here is one I took before it went off for the factory check over.

Engine is a 400 SBC with Weiand Blower.
Box is a G50/21 - 6 speeder which I'm pretty sure has LSD.

Should be good for over 500 ponies but the real test will be the 'black dyno' once it's registered smile

p.s. Now the car is done I have actually got round to fixing the garage door smash

I didn't, I got a new one made. A local engineering shop should be able to sort one out (or modify the standard one).

Yep, These big heated double garages and workshops are for Jessies wink

I think if it were a couple of inches narrower it would have been impossible to do my build as I can just about walk round the completed car when it's in there.

No air tools either so I can safely say that plenty of blood, sweat and tears went into the build headache

Maybe I should start a new thread on who has built their car in the smallest ever garage ........

p.s. sorry for the hijack

Thanks for the info on the stalks!

Here's a pic of my [just started] interior...

Dash is self-contained, everything required for SVA inc. warning lights - I'm trying to keep the dials and switches to a minimum as I'm not so keen on the massed line of dials. Also, I'm currently working out how to switch the blower direction and recirculate air toggle electronically; the idea is to stick in a production car A/C control panel.

Just goes to show you really can do anything with a big enough hammer... :-)

Dutchess, who is the manufacturer of your gauge display? I am just starting as well.

Thanks,

Randy

It's a DASH2 from Race Technology. I'm on a budget and it ticked all the boxes for about the £500 mark. Only downside is its pretty small so might look better on a 7 style car, but I want my dash clean and digital, so i can't fault it :-)

Like the look of that dash display. I am doing something very similar, but thinking of using the Aim XML Strada dash instead...

http://www.aimsports.com/products/mxl-strada/index...

It's also about £500. Was there a reason for chosing the Race Technology one over the Aim? Just out of interest as I will be purchasing soon...

Cheers, Mart

Alright guys heres a question for you.
Do you think it would be possible to strip out and refit the dash?
I am looking at possibly getting an ultima in the next few months already built but most of the ones i have seen either have too small an engine or the interior is not to my liking.
Theres a can am in the classifieds for example which looks good but needs a new interior and the engine is a bit small as i would like 450+
Also would it be possible to retrofit a wing I would have thought so but not too sure.
Actually how much do the engies usually cost, would it be worth taking the old one out and flogging and putting proceeds towards a new 450+bhp version or would it be easier to simply up the power on the existing engine?

My apologies for soooo many questions.

I did look at the Aim but it has a couple of things that are not SVA compliant - odo is resettable and speedo does not display the scale (mph or kph). So it was a no-go from the start. Also Race Tech has a neat GPS datalogger addon which means you can drive any track and get lap/sector times without having to use transponders... I'll add that when I can afford it :-)

Lucky,

What type of vents did you end up using?

Some appear to use Audi TT ones, but what other have been used successfully?

Anyone successfully used a doner control panel?

cheers
