Has anyone measured their Ultima with a noise meter or had it measured at a track day?

I'm thinking of build a GTR with a moderatly standard 350Ci smallblock chevy (425 bhp) and don't want to end up not being able to take it on normal track days. Exhaust system not yet decided.

Mine has been measured several times at race meetings. The loudest it's been measured is 117db, but that was when all of the packing had been blown out of the silencers

It's generally between 101-103db. Of course there is so much variation in engines and exhaust systems that yours could be kicking out just about anything.

Surely you need more that 420 bhp.... that's only just enough for a shopping car. What hope have you got in topping 200 mph !

101dB-103dB will do me if I can keep it late low. Although it will bar me from my local circuit, Goodwood. Shall have to invest in a good exhaust system.

Rev - I'll don't want to embarrass my friends too much as I dissappear into the distance.

I had my GTR SVA'd in March. It has a 406cid (about6.6L) rated at about 425bhp with a factory stainless exhaust. We set the rev counter to 6-cylinder and at 4,500rpm it showed only 96dB !!! I intend taking a trip to Goodwood & see what they get on their equipment now I've re-set the rev counter !!!

Could I ask where you got the engine from?
I assume the real revs were 3,375rpm. I think they measure 66% max rpm don't they? Neat trick for SVA though

Is this low power engine (425 bhp) just a cop out to avoid the race clutch that Ted had in the Yellow
525bhp Ultima last year.....

Barter - I got the engine by pure fluke from a guy who contacted me through the owners club. I basicly brought the block c/w re-ground crank & new pistons, rods, bearings, bolts and cam etc. It also came with new boxed Edelbrock heads, manifold, carb and some other bits and I built it up from there.

Not sure of the percentage for the SVA, but the guy asked me to rev it to about 4,500rpm, although I got the impression it would be a formality .... well worth the trip !!!!

Rev - The main reason for going for the pussy engine option was to avoid making it a 'no contest' when it comes to a straight fight with the Max Power brigade that tend to collect in & arround my area ... The car is about on par with a Saxo that seems to be 'de rigour' for most MPers arround here.

If I find I have an unfair advantage I've got plans to level things out by fitting a 'Massive' ICE system to drain any excess BHP.

No problem Barter - If you're traveling up from the south somewhere, your more than welcome to join us ... see details of where we're meeting in the 'Ultima Open Day' forum. Also, you can see some photo's of the car in Meetings/Events ... B/stoke PHers forum

Sorry Ultima Paul - it was meant as a slight wind up
for Barter; after having experienced the Clutch
in Ted's demonstrator last year. I thought that I was
pushing the brake pedal but no - it was the clutch.

Rev - No problem, in Ultima world, 425bhp could be classed as low powered!! I know what you mean about the clutch pedal though, when I first tried mine I thought I had got the wrong pedal too! You get used to it, and very strong thigh muscles! (is that spelt right)
