My son has acquired some cheap turntables,

"Citronics pd1"

Came without cartridges/Styli ?, I am not very well up on turntables, not got a clue where to look, are cartridges generic ?

Where would he get them from ?

How much ?

You can get them off the internet.

Stanton or Ortofon used to be the standard back when I was Djing (many years ago)

eBay/Amazon. The most frquently recommended cartridge (IMO!) is the Audio Technical AT95E. About £30. Cheaper options are available but the AT95E has graced turntables at nearly all budgets.

If it's for DJing though, best to look elsewhere. Again, eBay and Amazon tho'.

He'd better check first if his amp/phono stage is Moving Magnet or Moving Coil (there are other types as well but those are the basic two).

It will determine which sort to buy. Broadly, but not infallibly, MM is cheaper than MC.

If it's two turntables then it's the mixer you'll need to check, not the amp, as the tables will connect to the mixer first.

AT95E is a fine cartridge and unbeatable value.

AT95E used to be £18! AT110E was not a lot more and markedly better though IMO.
Anyway, I digress. If he's dj'ing he'll need stantons as a standard cartridge will break. Stantons had stronger cantilevers for that reason

Someone buys turntables- plural, which is more than likely for home DJ'ing/mixing use- and people recommending Audio Technica carts? hehe

Get some Stanton 500s which don't sound amazing when compared to others, but are pretty robust, and a great starter cart for that reason.

Other suggestions would be Ortofon concordes (Pro-S, or DJ-S are great all rounders) or the best DJ cartidges in existence, Shure M44-7.

The Stantons and Shures will require headshells - the ortofon concordes have the advantage of being all in one, just screw on.

Moving Magnet or Moving Coil doesn't come into it. You need the pair of turntables, a pair of one of the above carts, and a DJ mixer and that is all.

He does have a DJ mixer already as well, right?

Actually, good point above, but worth also checking does he have headshells?

Because if not you'll need cartridge, stylus and headshell, so it's going to start looking expensive, and may be better off looking at something like this:

Well, you might make that assumption but I, for example, have six turntables and I don't home DJ/mix. The DJ cartridges are generally of poor quality and chew up vinyl, so should only be used in the context of DJ/mixing/bangin' choons but never on any vinyl you want to keep/preserve/play on a decent system.

And no mention of a mixer in OP.

If your assumptions are correct, I agree. If not, it will all depend on the set up and best to check IMO.
