From the Xbox one X thread, it seems that there are quite a few of us looking at new HDR10 capable TVs.

Seems silly to have a HDR10 gaming source into an old 1080 TV, thus the shopping.

Requirements wise, it's for my front room, which currently has a 55" LG 3D TV of 2013 vintage. So;
  • same size if not slightly bigger,
  • budget is 1500-2k range, however would rather have a decent return then throwing money at something as its the newest sparkliest gimmick.
  • on board audio isn't important as its offloaded onto a Marantz receiver / Monitor silvers
  • not fussed by smart / having Netflix etc on the TV as its all handled already by a different source.
  • doesn't have to be able to read from network storage, as that's handled by the receiver too.
  • needs to be slightly raised due to having the Monitor center speaker in front of it. (18.5cm tall..)
Basically, its all about the picture quality as I don't need any of the addons due to being covered by dedicated ancillaries.

At the moment looking at the LG OLED55B7V or the Samsung UE65MU9000.

Pushing the budget a little, my local RS has a Samsung QE65Q8C.

Questions at the moment are are there any other models I should be looking at, and is there a large difference (£600 "worth") between the two Samsungs / the LG?

Thanks

LG OLED.

/thread end.

wink

Seriously though, once you've lived with OLED it's difficult going back to LCD (no matter how many or positioning of the led bulbs).

I'm not a 'gamer' but I've read very few issues of lag or anything. The LGs come with a 'gaming' preset too.

That £600 extra will also improve your general viewing - justify it to yourself that way smile

So from my looking, I have the LG OLED B7 at £1700 55/65 £2700, or the Samsung QE65Q8C at 65 / £2400 (should be £3.5 but is exdemo).

Do you think the OLED 65 is worth more then the heavily discounted Samsung?

Or if Its better to stay at the £1700 level, stay with 55? at that price point, is the B7 LG the best bet? (as tbh I really dont need a 65. I don't understand the "hey look at my massive tv" when everyone sits 6 foot away from it anyway.)

Panasonic 55ez952.

55" OLED. No frills and it's all about the picture. Just picked one up and it's phenomenal. Not as 'bright' as other TV's and it makes for a wonderful and realistic viewing.

Nice and low lag for gaming.

The old salesman adage: " had a few customers back saying they wish they'd bought the bigger screen. Can't remember one saying they wish they'd gone smaller" wink

Depends on the room obviously - 65" looks fine in mine whereas a 50" looks rediculous in a spare room. Take into account the tiny bezels on OLED - my 65" is only an inch wider either side than my old 50" plasma - again, your measurements may vary.

In your position I'd take the £2400 for the Samsung and buy the 55" B7 and use the remaining cash to get a used top-end sub, used monster amp or improve your L&R speakers.
Excellent screen with huge improvements to your sound system all for the price of a discounted LCD tv smile

Can't beat man math smile

So answer to thread is measure up and see if the 65 will look sensible, but in both cases go for the OLED LG?

And the Samsung panel is worse than the LG at the 65 level?

I know nothing about TVs, seems however that LG are miles ahead of the competition?

I have a 48" JS9000 Samsung. It's 2 years old now, but it's at least as good as the very latest Samsung stuff (side lit > bottom lit). My brother-in-law has 55" and 65" entry level LG OLEDs. We both have 4k BR players/PS4Pro, and BIL also has X Box One.

OLED simply has a better picture than any LCD - only criticism I could level at it is it's not quite there when displaying 'just off black'... so can occasionally look slightly dark. But it's nit picking really... it's as good as you're going to get.

I would have bought one myself, but can't get OLED's in a 48" panel.

The technology is just starting to mature - the 7 series LGs look to have ironed out any previous production issues.
LCD on the other hand peaked some years ago and, in my opinion, any latest updates aren't actually adding anything meaningful to PQ.

Has to be LG OLED for me.

There are a couple of threads on https://www.hotukdeals.com/ where you can get the LG OLED55B7V for around 1500 BTW. EDIT, the LG OLED65B7V 65 is £2429 from Argos with the TV10 promo code.

Great thread, been a Samsung tv advocate for many years, but it looks like LG are the current brand of choice?

Pretty sure this ticks all the boxes - https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-and-home-entertai...

Edit - Although it's getting a bit long in the tooth, any newer models on the way does anybody know?

I currently have a Panasonic 4K 55” without HDR so I don’t really need a new TV but I am interested but I’m not going to spunk £1500 on a TV.

I’m looking at the below TV’S both excellent for gaming.

LG55J810V - £999
LG55J710V - £599

There is also a couple of curved 9 series Samsung’s knocking around for less than a grand.

If anyone is interested they can buy my TV for £350

We bought a 55B7 around 2 months ago and have been very impressed.

We have a 65" Panasonic VT65 and the 55" LG B7 and we will now watch films on the LG simply due to the black levels and colours.

Can't speak for any of the other manufacturer's OLEDs but we are very happy with our B7

When it comes to screen size might find this useful, http://carltonbale.com/1080p-does-matter/

Basically its saying for 4k your viewing distance is less to be able to get the benefit. Having had my LG 55 b7 for a month now I see the point, mind blowing quality viewing from 2m but from my normal 3.5m it just didn't seem massively better than my 55 led. So if you sit a distance from the TV you might be disappointed and end up thinking OLED 4k was worth it.

That said I love my LG b7 OLED, streaming Netflix Dolby vision stuff is stunning
