I'm on the lookout for a new TV for the living room also. Like many others I don't want to go any bigger than 50 inches so it seems OLED is ruled out. I've heard a lot of good things about the LCD Sony KD49XE9005, which seems to be the best performer in the 50 and under size bracket, especially for HDR. At circa 1100GBP it's a bit more than I wanted to spend however, especially as it's it not even OLED. Does anyone have this set?

At the cheaper end of the scale, Amazon are currently offering the lower spec Sony KD49XE8004 for 575 GBP including a 2nd Gen Amazon Echo thrown in. This seems to be a bargain and, whilst the HDR performance will be under par I'm tempted for now (until OLED / HDR becomes a bit more bedded in).. Does anyone have any opinions on this cheaper option? Reviews seem to be a little thin on the ground for the XE80. It will be used mainly for TV/PS4 (standard but might upgrade to Pro)/Netflix/Amazon Prime/YouTube. Feel like I need to make my mind up on the cheaper Sony as it'll probably sell out and I doubt the XE90 will be reduced by too much for Black Friday.

XE80 is IPS so has a lower contrast ratio than a VA panel equipped TV like the Hisense N6800 or Panasonic EX700 that are priced simalarly.

Well, I cancelled my E7 with Peter Tyson this morning.

Great set, but I was thinking I would quite like to have this TV with a soundbar (want to get rid of my av system and just have stereo) and the built in one will stop me doing this.

So someone may get their E7 from there even quicker.

B7 and C7 now £1349 at Currys by the way too.

Thanks. I don't think the stand on the Hisense would work with my TV unit but the EX700 is an option.. I'll check it out too.

EX750B is the EX700 replacement, can be had for a similar price as the 9005, actually less, and it quite a bit better than the XE700.

I do like Sony's processing though, especially with LCD where motion resolution needs all the help it can get.

Are you sure about that? From what I've read the EX700 is largely carried over from the DX700, the 750 is a much better TV with a much higher price tag.

The EX750B is a pretty impressive set to be fair, I thought it handled blooming better than the 9005 next to it.

However, with OLEDs now at £1350 I would try and find the extra.

All this talk of OLED for gaming, I'd be a bit wary of screen burn with in-game HUD's.

Didn't realise the problem was as bad as it apparently is but Sky News was been ruining LG OLED panels.

I have my OLED backlight on 100, I watch Sky News a lot, probably 3 hours a day, and I game. No issues here.

LCD is just too big a compromise image wise, crap viewing angles and not being able to do ansi contrast properly is not something I could ever get used to.

The LG 49SJ800v looks to be another contender too. 10 bit panel and I really like LG's OS

Hope it stays that way for you too. Don't own an OLED TV myself, although I did toy with the idea last year. It was only brought to my attention with an iPhone X suffering from screen burn already.

I didn't realise that LG were the only bulk manufacturer of OLED panels for all of the other TV brands.

I'd be pretty pissed if I'd spent out for a nice new OLED TV and then had it ruined within a year by watching the wrong channel for too long. Doesn't appear to be anything that can be done once the problem has developed either.

LG LCD based TV's use IPS panels. I happen to like them, but many do not, worth you reading up about the difference between IPS & VA so you know what to look for.

Image retention and screen burn issues are a bit scary, it's making me a bit nervous about taking delivery of my LG.

That Sky thread is making for some pretty scary reading. eek

Not seen any image retention in 18 months (2015 model). Not gaming a lot though. Watch HD and 4k sport when it is on. Never see a remnant of the score or clocks.

With the LG, leave the TV switched on at the mains and turn it off on the remote and it does a compensation cycle that is supposed to alleviate this (I think).

Code says it's not valid on those models.

It was earlier, and when I went to put it in it said invalid.

Spoke to the online assistant and she gave me another code to use.

Had the same with plasma for the 15 years on the forums too.

I have never had an issue with any of them.

Apparently they've stopped doing that too. I've ordered a JL pre-paid card so I need something they'll price match anyway.

It was the only reason I avoided plasma for gaming and got an LCD instead. Saw loads of screen burn issues with plasma's over the years.

Was only mentioning it as I was unaware it was even a possibility with OLED until today.
