I need to replace my old AppleTV with a new model.

My current AppleTV has the HDMI output going into my HD matrix, plus the optical output goes into a converter which then connects via RCA to my multiroom audio amp.

The new AppleTV doesn't have an optical output, only HDMI.

So, I need a recommendation please for a splitter to turn the HDMI output from the AppleTV into HDMI output plus RCA.

As always, there are a bunch on Amazon starting at £20, but I'd rather go for something that's tried and tested.

Thanks!

I have one of the cheap HDMI 4 in 1 out with optical breakout boxes and it just works as it should, they mainly appear to be badged generic electronics so unless you can find one made by well known brand they are probably the only way to go. If you use Amazon I'd suggest looking at reviews and more importantly if questions get usefully answered by the seller, you can always check out other products from the same seller to see if they offer reasonable support.

I bought my switcher just over a year ago and it went unavailable after a few months, however the seller did respond to a couple of questions so I'd say they are as good as any if they sell a type you need.

What you need is a HDMI Audio De Embedder, this is one.

The OP should note that the one linked is HD-only so might prove a restriction later. The newer Apple TV does 4k into suitable displays, but that would fail dismally if such a splitter was in the way. If you plan to use or get a UHD TV or projector then your matrix switch and audio decoding is going to need to support HDCP 2.2. There are some appearing now that may fit the bill, but there's still plenty of opportunity to get the wrong one. Make sure you use a retailer with a painless returns policy.

Edited to add: the Lindy one linked above does support 4k, but only up to 30Hz. That would preclude using it with Sky Q for example. The market is still adapting to all this new stuff.

Get an airport express.
Set your apple tv to airplay the audio to the express, then connect the analogue output of the airport express to the input of your amp.

Job done.

Thanks all.

I've ordered a CYP de-embedder, should arrive in the next couple of days.

I'm not fussed about 4k (I don't own anything 4k) so that hasn't influenced the choice.

Interesting point on using the Airport Express - hadn't thought of that! Ah well.
