Riiiight, I've fallen way behind in the technology stakes and am bewildered by the amount of choice out there. I'm looking for some advice as to how to go about updating the family home.

Currently we have an HD telly with Sky (not Sky Q or multiroom) in the lounge and two smaller tv's in other rooms, one of which has a cable running under the floorboards from the main TV so that I can watch football in the kitchen on a Sunday whilst cooking the dinner. We have an xbox and a PC and (gasp) broadband / wifi.

I'm ideally looking for something that means we can listen to (spotify) music and/or TV in various rooms.

The mainstream option would appear to be Sky Q and an Amazon fire stick (except the missus doesn't like Alexa whenever we've been to other peoples houses) but i'm sure that there must be other routes I could take.

Any pointers?

Voice control (when it works) is by far the best way I've found to control home audio, it really is quick and easy. There is no faffing with remotes, no dragging your phone out of you pocket, unlocking it, launching the app to control the audio, finding what you want, then choosing what device to play it on.

Sonos with Alexa built in would be very quick and easy and give good results. Smaller budget one of the Echos, or a Dot if you want to plug it into an existing radio/hifi. Very easy to do multi room audio.

With the Sonos you can always use their app to control it as well.

Multi room video is much harder unless you want to use a streaming service.

Soundwise yes, but the Alexa functionality is dire, so much so that I have switched it off. It responds to the TV without 'Alexa' even being said, point blank refuses to play Radio 5 Live, whereas my Dot and Amazon Alexa have no issue with it. Seriously, just don't.

You don’t need to use Alexa to use a fire stick. In fact I’m not sure the skill is even enabled in the uk yet.
