What center speaker to go with 2.1 system?
Discussion
Hi, birthday is coming up and hoping to get a center speaker to improve the dialogue on the Onkyo HTX22 2.1 system I have.
The upgrade SKS to 5.1 is pretty rare even on Ebay and to be honest, I don't need the two rears.
Are there any obvious choices that would balance ok with this system? There is a M&K S85 in the AVForums classifieds but I have no idea if this would be a good match or not...
Cheers

To be brutally honest; I don't think an MK speaker would add anything to your set up apart from imbalance: There is a school of thought that you can use any good speaker for the centre, but I don't subscribe to that theory: Over 20 years I've tried all manner of different speaker combinations and the only ones that worked were those with properly matching LCR speakers (and the best were those with matching surrounds and Atmos channels too).
When they properly match (and the centre is positioned properly, not jammed into an AV cabinet pointing at your feet) you rarely get those issues when the sound effects overwhelm the dialogue. I remember when there was a TV series that viewers were complaining about 'mumbled voices' (called something like SSGB?), but I had no problems following dialogue and no overpowering sound effects.
I'm not even sure if you can add a centre to the Onkyo HTX22 2.1 having searched for it, seems like a powered sub with two satellites connected to the sub? If it can, perhaps the best option would be to pick up a spare speaker from another Onkyo HTX22 2.1 if you can find one? At least it'll match, shouldn't cost too much and in the longer term consider saving up for a better LCR set (and then AVR if the Onkyo HTX22 2.1 can't power other speakers as sometimes can be the case with all in one systems). It's a slippery slope of course...
