Got an engineer organised through Sky to come out next week to install Sky Q and a multi room box.

I am just wondering what the engineer will actually be going and If I need to be in. Some people say he will be fitting something to my dish but does Sky Q used the same cables from the wall to box to get a signal?

They won't tell you that an engineer needs to visit just for the sts and giggles.

Sky Q needs one to set up the box properly and the multi room, and to change part of the satellite dish, and in some cases replace the lot if it is showing signs of age.

SkyQ is not a self-install process.

It needs the electronics in the end of the dish arm changing and as a minimum the two boxes connected to each other (via WiFi or wired network) and the main one connected to the satellite dish.

Then the are a whole bunch of sign-offs and checks the engineer has to do over the network on their iPad.

So yes someone will have to be ‘in’

Same install done here 2 weeks ago. Engineer was her for an hour and a half.

New dish (ours was too old apparently)
Re-run of cable
Lots of setup
Setup of mini box on the other tv upstairs
Demo of system use
Demo of app use
Checking of signal
Taking photos of how well he was following his H&S rules.

Our Q install a week or so ago was the direct opposite, the dish was already up and had the wideband LNB already.

So literally was a metre of shotgun cable from the wall connection (house pre-wired) with pushfit connections, connected the main box to the shotgun and cat6, turned on and checked.

The Qmini was left with me to install (plug and hdmi basically) and a 5min job

Was here a max of 35mins

Unless you have a non standard dish or fitted it yourself, it’s unlikely you would have had the correct lnb in place already.

It is totally different from the previous incarnation.

I’ll assumed that’s aimed at me ... ‘twas installed by our builder (or their contractor at any rate)

Just checked and we have a quad LNB so that will have to be changed.

Also depending on the location of the dish they'll need to drill and fit an eye bolt (possibly 2) to secure their ladder to gain access to your dish.

So if you have a nicely rendered wall (or have wall OCD), beware.

Hijacking this thread slightly however we upgrading to Sky Q later this month and currently have Sky+ box.

My question relates to the length of cable which can be used when the engineer installs the Q box.

Our current Sky + box and TV are right next to where the cables come from the dish into the house. However, I’m looking to have my tv around 4m away from this point and therefore the Sky Q box in the same position.

Is there a limit on cable length running to the Sky Q box?

My Sky Q box is probably a 50m cable run from the dish, maybe more.

However, the user interface of Sky Q is so bad if Sky offered the old Sky+ box with the Q features for £1500 per month more I'd move to it.

God it's crap.

Hopefully they are coming back sharpish James!

We are doing a private install for a client today, Dish 4 storeys up on a Chimney Stack, Apartment in the basement. Sky wouldnt touch it so we are getting the cables into place and then they can do thier bit.

Do you share a dish or do you have an individual one just for you?

Stick with it. In general it's an improvement once you're used to it. Mind you, I moved to Virgin for a year before getting Sky reinstalled. If you want a crap interface try the V box...OMG

Pro tip:

for the install, ask for a hybrid LNB.

The benefit of this LNB, is that if you ever want to use the UHD/4k box in another room, its just a matter of moving the actual SkyQ box and that's it. It also means, if you want Freesat in another room, you will have that option.

If you don't install a hybrid LNB, then you'll be restricted to only ever having the option of the 4k box in one room, plus you won't be able to use freesat (if that actually matters to people)

My personal (not work) view is that the Sky+ UI was better than the Q UI.

However, the new Q UI is needed for all of the extra features that Q provides over +

as above, stick with it, it does get easier - also, using the bluetooth remote with voice is good

SkyQ UI isn't so bad. Just set up favourites.
Also HD channels are in logical 1,2,3,4,5 order, not seen on channels menu..

popped round to a friends a few weeks ago and she said that she was trying to find a programme on catch up, but could not get it to work.
So I connected it to her wifi... works much better now.
She reckons it was never on Wifi since she got it installed two years ago....

It would have had to have been at some point - the card is activated over the internet.
