Strange setup . Best way to get audio from PS3?
Discussion
I am having a couple of issues after digging out my old (pro logic) surround sound gear.
I am limited in options as the Receiver's optical inputs appear to be knackered , or maybe it's my only optical cable, but it 'appears' to be working..
Anyway, with no optical option, the PS3 only has HDMI out, which goes to the TV. The TV has no audio out option apart from the 3.5mm headphone jack and Optical.
I am currently using the headphone jack and converting to RCA and that actually sounds ok but it rules out any chance of surround sound.
Assuming the optical facility of the receiver is Not working..as I see it, my options are:
1: take the optical signal from the PS3 and run it into a DAC before the receiver.
2: split the HDMI signal and send audio and video to the TV As usual and use a converter from the second (duplicated) HDMI feed to extract the audio to send to the receiver.
Or..buy another Optical cable first to see if that's the problem but when I plug it into to any of my sources it is glowing red at the other end..is that confirmation that it is fine?
A side issue I need to figure out is why the bloody remote won't adjust the volume..but that another problem...
Appreciate any advice.

Can you not go HDMI from PS3 to receiver. Then HDMI from receiver to TV?
Nope, the receiver was made when HDMI was not a thing, and it also has no wi-fi/networking stuff.I cant believe how old the thing is now i think about it. I must have bought it nearly 20yrs ago!

Hang on, just noticed you mentioned surround sound - not sure if the AV multi out supports more than 2 channels. I only ever used it for music. Still a better solution than taking it from the TV headphone output though.
I guess i will find out I am not sure how the pro logic bit works but i have only ever had left and right RCA cables providing audio from DVD players etc in the passed and the amp figures out what is supposed to go to the center and rear channels. (actually its only really one rear channel, split to two speakers, i think.I am doubting myself now though..

On a PS3...
HDMI OUT is 7.1 (and 5.1 and 2)
DIGITAL OUT (Optical) is 5.1 (and 2)
AV MULTI OUT is 2ch
Thanks for that. The receiver is not capable of 5.1 or 7.1 so i guess the the audio channels from the AV multi out is all i need!HDMI OUT is 7.1 (and 5.1 and 2)

Curiously, the receiver has an 'enhanced' pro logic mode which i thought was for two more front 'effect' speakers, but it doesn't have any extra speaker outputs to facilitate them..
Not that it will help you a great deal but I suspect the optical connectors are just dirty.
Fibre optics are really sensitive to dirt, dust and grease, even if it’s multi-mode which I reckon this is.
However, you can’t just go and give things a wipe with a bit of bog roll, to be effective requires specialist cleaning kit.
And of course, that might not be the issue anyway.

Is the optical cable inserted properly? Some optical sockets are tighter than others in my experience, my Sony receiver needs quite a strong push to get the optical lead connected properly.
I have noticed that, mainly on the PS3. But yes I am making sure it is plugged in securely.Your Dad said:
I've got an Onkyo 505 that I had hooked up to my PS3 via HDMI, then HDMI to the TV from the Onkyo.
Onkyo is now surplus to requirements, if you're near Sheffield I'll let it go in exchange for a cash consideration.
That would be a upgrade from what I have now..But I am up Nr Aberdeen, and too stingy to buy anything if i don't need too, but thanks Onkyo is now surplus to requirements, if you're near Sheffield I'll let it go in exchange for a cash consideration.
Plus, I wouldn't use 7.1 and i am not sure 5.1 would be a big change as i cant really use two separate rear channels due to the layout of the room. I just one have rear bi-polar speaker.in the middle.

I thought enhanced pro logic mode was s ort of pseudo effect ? Forgive me its a long time since I had a pro logic ampCuriously, the receiver has an 'enhanced' pro logic mode which i thought was for two more front 'effect' speakers, but it doesn't have any extra speaker outputs to facilitate them..

genuinely had this problem myself. daft as it sounds some cables worked some didn't and I found one that did. If theres wear on the socket and its a thick cable the weight of the cable can cause a loose connectionGassing Station | Home Cinema & Hi-Fi | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
