If you're spending nigh on a grand on a TV, it's worth getting John Lewis or Richer Sounds to price match for the 6/7 year guarantee.

I think it was said they would match the 945 but not the 100 cash back?

For my money that'd still be worth it - both JL & RS have good reputations for not quibbling over customer returns if there's an issue.

I wouldn’t dream of buying anything that wasn’t oled to be honest. Once you’ve seen the picture on an oled an lcd won’t impress. Get an LG 55 C8.

"Whats the general opinion on Samsung these days?"

Mine died of 'old age' at three years and a week. Horizontal white line across the top of the screen. The line bred and become two, then three.

Out of warranty, said Samsung. In the bin, said Slushbox. 'common fault' says the intnerweb.

I gave up on the broadcast TV thing and bought a nice white Iiyama PC monitor and a Fire Stick.

So far, I'm not missing not having any live BBC content. :-)
Doesn’t sound ideal :-/

Just ordered the Sony from TPS. Thanks for the comments and pointers everyone.

Had a look at it in currys alongside samsung, lg and panasonic. Obviously all the TVs are setup for demo but the Sony looked more natural and considering TPS is quite a bit cheaper with a 7 year warranty it seemed the logical choice. Did like the big OLEDs but £2K on a telly is wasted on me.

Hopefully it looks as good in daylight!
the tv stand puts me off it tbh can it be replaced do you know?

the picture looked a bit dark in jl but might have been the way they set it up.

have to say i love the frame tv's looks but cant spend that much on a mediocre tv. all the rest look like comet crap in comparison.

very hard to tell tvs apart in a shop frown

Other than to get an impression of size or have a look at the stand in the flesh, there is just no point in going into a shop to view a TV. Between the demo modes used and the generally poor set up of content you don't get a true impression of how it'll look. I'll always listen to reliable reviews from websites like HDTVTest etc over what I can see in a shop, even a more reputable retailer.

I remember going into JL prior to buying my TV. One of my vague considerations was upscaling of SD and HD content - and it looked utterly dire. The reviews all commented on how the image processor (Sony X1 Extreme) was a big step up from that on the lower end processor included on the next model down. You wouldn't know it from what I was watching in store - it was horrible, and more noticeable due to the screen size (65".)

I got the TV anyway.

5 minutes ago SWMBO remarked, "you can see every pore when I'm watching Strictly on your TV," (I like how it's 'my TV,' incidentally - she normally watches it on a 42" plasma in the living room) and proceeded to make remarks on how she didn't realise how old such-and-such dancer looked up close. That's HD content, not 4K. And even SD looks better than what I saw in store.

any views on this one - wondering whether to just get a cheap one for 2 years then get an oled when they are a more reasonable price / when we have the lounge for it? we have a 7 year old so would worry any v posh tv might get trashed. + like the looks of this one esp cw the sony

The older version got decent reviews, provisionally it looks alright.

In your shoes I would 100%, without any doubt spend cheap now and bank the money for when you've got the lounge for a bigger TV. I've got strong views on size generally, but even taking those out of the mix manufacturers aren't putting high end features on screens smaller than 55". I'd get something cheap as a new toy (and future bedroom/kitchen/garage TV) and spend big when you've got the room for a bigger screen.

TPS have a great rep for exchanging if any issues with backlight bleed, dirty screen effect etc.

John Lewis have got pretty bad at this in the last 6 months or so, now the old "within spec" line gets pumped out by them.

The Sony will go very bright, no issues there.
One thing to consider is certain things that stop it going bright are options like ECO mode which is not in the picture settings menu.

I love my OLEDs, but I would happily own one of these Sony XF90s, in fact I am selling my B&O Beovision 8-40 in the sitting room to get one.

I agree on the design of the stand on the Sony, absolutely hideous.

I am going to build a rack for it using reclaimed wood.

I have a Yamaha YPS-40D soundbar, I am going to build a rack like this...

Make it so the soundbar fits in the gap perfectly with no gaps, and slightly shorter more industrial feet.

The TV is actually exactly the same width as the rack then as well.

Then get a vesa ceiling mount and mount it upside on the rack, so the TV will sit on it looking more like the Sony A1 OLED.
Some of the ceiling mounts have a slight 5º tilt to them.

It should keep it looking neat.

This is the B&O, I want the new TV to disappear into that corner too..

A cheap stand like this would be better than the one it comes with...

why not another oled - is it as you want a smaller than 55 tv?

Yeah.

I would really like a 46", but the Sony is the only one that is genuinely decent under 55" in size.

What is your 7 year old TV?

I have a 9 year old B&O that uses a Samsung VA panel, it is also backlit rather than edgelit, it still beats most LCDs out there image wise and black level wise.
That Samsung, and most sub 55" LCD sets now, use IPS panels, which means they simply can't do blacks properly.

This is my 9 year old Beovision 8 with a VA panel....

I couldn't live with an IPS panel.

Look like the 40” nu7210 Samsung uses VA panel. Seems like most companies have forgotten about 40” TVs
