For alternatives look at the offerings from Yamaha- they have a range of about 30 devices all of which play hi res and, I believe, can stream from Bluetooth to the whole system thereby avoiding the problems of sonos.

I guess Yamaha might be an alternative but I tried a WX010 and to say it is poor compared with the Play 1 is an understatement. It is rubbish by comparison. Sure you can feed it high res audio. It still sounds rubbish.

I also emailed Yamaha support 5 days ago asking them about their firmware support/longevity of units and they've not even bothered to reply.

Bluesound Node/Powernode looks interesting.

Slight off topic, but I suspect the 'Sonos knowledge' is here all the same.

I have now a surplus Sony soundbar / sub.
It can take input via HDMI or Optical.

Is there anyway to craft it in to a SONOS network of speakers around the house - without silly money obviously.
I am thinking of putting it in my office, but if £150+ to make it worl, I may as well just get a Play:1

Look for an old ZP80 or ZP90 on ebay, they have an optical out. But you're still looking at £60-80, and they're on the legacy list that will drop off support in a few months.

Ikea Symfonisk Sonos speakers are actually pretty good, are £100 new and will be supported for ages.

Thanks - confirmed my general thoughts that I need a 'connect' - but not a wasteful spend on one, when I can just use a Sonos speaker itself....
Just looking to upcycle rather than bin the Soundbar....

Thanks - it is more to do with having a house full of Sonos in a multi-room set up (and lets be honest, what we have learnt is that unless using for the Multi room aspect, Sonos is not the ideal solution...!)

So I was hoping to using the Sony playbar somehow as an extension of the Sonos multiroom network.

I am guessing the Raspberry Pi solution has two issues :

1) does not shackle in to the Sonos eco-system
2) needs someone with some brains to set up vs. myself !

1) Sonos is sonos, it does multiroom with sonos.
However, Volumio can do multiroom itself.

2) Set up is dead easy.
You can download it onto a laptop to see what you think.
Download the android/ios app to see the controller, or use another PC to control it.

Set up is copying the file onto an sd card with 'etcher' and putting it in the Raspberry pi.

Working on a project now with Raspberry Pi.

you can get an image of a standard pi operating system here https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/ ive been using Buster. Works fairly well.
Unless Volumio is an oparating system on its own?

edit to add
Seems Volumio is an operating system in its own right. Install guide here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nn1piVJWtSo

paperbag other than 'ordering' a pi, I would not have the foggiest what I would have to do next.

Perhaps wait 2 years for my 6yr old to be fluent in such things biggrin

I picked up an old Raspberry Pi 2 for £15 the other week fully intending to set up a 'pi-hole' (network wide ad-blocker essentially) but I'm now seriously considering turning it in to a tiny wee hi-fi system for my caravan.

I know nothing about them but getting software on it/up and running consisted of downloading 'Raspbian OS' on to my PC, using an app/utility called 'Rufus' to write Raspbian on to a micro SD card on my PC, installed micro SD to the Pi 2 and attached it to screen/keyboard/mouse/ethernet/power and it was up and running! There's loads of advice and videos about using them as DACs/streamers/endpoints to great effect - I've been watching a fella on YT recently called (John) Darko and he covers a lot of digital media equipment (or future-fi as he calls it...) and can take you down a right rabbit hole of Rapberry Pi related stuff.

Finally got a (pretty worthless) email reply from Yamaha:

Thanks for your email and for your interest in Yamaha A/V & Hi-fi.
As your email has come through to the AV & Hi-fi technical support team, normally we are assisting in operation and technical support of all Yamaha A/V & Hi-fi equipment, due to the nature of your enquiry, we have referred your question to our AV & Hi-fi sales team, we are awaiting a response, as soon as we have some further information, we will get back to you, we appreciate your patience.
From history, we have always endeavoured to go above and beyond to give all customers the best value from purchasing any Yamaha AV & Hi-fi product with telephone/email support as well as firmware support should any issues arise that require updates.
Hope this helps and if you have any further questions or queries, please do not hesitate to ask.
Many thanks
Yamaha Technical A/V

Successfully shifted 5 stand alone Sonos speakers (Play:3 and Play:1) on eBay for what I considered a fair price considering I bought them second hand at least 2 years ago. So there is still a market out there. Now I need to decide whether to upgrade an old amp to a new one with the cash or what...

It will be interesting if, when more widely known, the value of legacy items will drop to almost nothing as there is no way to test if they have been put into recycle mode and thus will be worthless a few weeks after purchase.

Have SONOS essentially destroyed the aftermarket for the older devices? I guess only time will tell.

My understanding is that older units had mute symbol on the square button and newer ones have play/pause.
