Interesting. I have thought about a Rega arm. What will you do about height? My understanding is that it's not adjustable on Rega arms.
Rega arm height is not adjustable in the way some other arms are, but you can buy spacers to adjust it. (then again Roy Gandy doesn't think VTA is that important).http://mackiefamily.unospace.net/documents/regaonv...
True, but there are so many rabbit holes you can disappear down in Hi fi. After years of fiddling I tend to the view that a cartridge is designed to perform best when set within mfrs spec, at least as a starting point. But in the end if it sounds good, that's all that really matters.
Well it's mostly back together (I ran over the power switch with my chair) but still an imbalance on the channels looks like I may need to replace the light sensitive resistors to fix that.
Also really bad ground loop hum from the record deck when input is selected and nothing is playing
Do I've bought another amp to test it with an old sansui one
I missed out on a cheap pro-ject deck on gumtree as the advert expired before I could call up will find out one way or the other what the issue is!

This thread is tempting me to get up into the loft and dig out our 80s vintage hi-fi to see if it still works. Should be a two decks - a Rega Planar 3 with the RB 300 arm and a Dual 603 (DD), NAD3020 amp, Mission speakers, Rotel receiver, Tecnics cassette machine, an EQ and a CD player. Trouble is, it all takes up so much space compare to an IPhone and a BOSE !! Where’s th3 market for any of this old stuff ?
You may be surprised at the 2nd user market prices. A decent Planar 3 £200 easily. Nad 3020a seem to fetch another £100. Not bad for what was a £150 turntable and £85 amp. Mission speakers could be a few more decent ££.The_Burg said:

Stuff on the rack:
Rega Planar 1 Turntable
Sony TA-FA3ES Intergrated Amp as a preamp
Sony TA-N55ES Power Amps (One for HF, one for LF) x2
Sony TC-RX70ES Cassette Deck
Sony MDS-JA20ES Mindisc Desk
Sony CDP-XA2ES CD Player
These run some Monitor Audio GS10's.
In the loft:
Sony TA-N55ES Power Amp
Sony TA-E1000ESD A/V Preamplifier (This needs a proper test but don't think its 100% healthy)
Sony ST-SE500ES Tuner
B&W DM603 S2 Floorstanding Speakers
Sony La Scala Hifi System (without Minidisc desk, would love one but they're like rocking horse ****)

My Systemdek IIX turntable
I remember I had a Systemdec in the eighties. iirc it was painted with Nextel and you could get them in many exotic colours. Paired with Infinity tone-arm and Denon cartridge which had been sent to New Zealand to be customised by the Garret brothers. Old now, and memory hazy, so details could be wrong. It's not the most revealing turntable in the world but it does have a pleasingly 'vinyl' sound that I am fond of.
but other colours were available
Main rival back in the day was the evergreen RP3, not much in it but I chose a IIX for the suspended subchassis - a bit less fussy about vibration/feedback.
I always though it was a rival to a linn sondek. Made in scotland. Bit cheaper. At some stage it was the sound the Linn was moving toward with its upgrades as the earliest Linn had a lot of colouration to the sound.Linn's signature I guess.
So I've bought a sansui amp now arrived this morning that's got a duff Chanel too so trying to get a list of all caps I need
It's only a au-g30x but it has more inputs so that's good
And if uses phono not din connectors thankfully!
Also just put an offer in on a dual cs-595-3
So it's snowballing

I have inherited on of these. A grey one. Sadly after storing it the motor has seized up. Would like to fix it but the plentiful listing for motors on ebay when I checked several years ago have gone. Even though its just a 50hz syncronous motor.

when I had my Systemdec it was a highly regarded piece of kit and more interesting looking than the sondek (my brother-in-law had one of them). As for the Linn its sort of what all expensive hifi seems to be. A masterclass in traditional cabinet making. I think Dunlop efforts were a way to move beyone drawing room furniture even though it may have been a mistake to the buying public.

I picked up a motor not that long ago for another Systemdek I had - mine was a 60hz version - quite cheaply. eBay, search premotec just watch the voltage and frequency
If we are continuing the Dunlop love, here's mine.
Bought new in 1985 with a Linn LV V arm and still rocking a (recently replaced) Audio Technica cartridge. At the time it was paired with NAD 3130 and a pair of Tannoy Mercury Gold II's.
These days it can pass through either the Quad setup next to it or via a phono amp to a Denon AV amp - either way it ends up going to a set of Monitor Audio floor standers.

I’ve got a La Scala S2 with Mini Disc which I bought new in 1996. Bought with Mission 733 speakers which I replaced with Tannoy R2s. Sounds brilliant.
Interesting fact: even though it has one, I’ve never used the tuner in 25 years for no better reason than I never got round to plugging in an aerial. Beware the minidisc players are woefully unreliable.

I've once had a hankering for a high-end Sony amp combo. I remember, many years ago when Walkmans were all the rage that Sony introduced a child friendly version and advertised it as "My First Sony". Stuff on the rack:
Rega Planar 1 Turntable
Sony TA-FA3ES Intergrated Amp as a preamp
Sony TA-N55ES Power Amps (One for HF, one for LF) x2
Sony TC-RX70ES Cassette Deck

Some time later they used a similar tagline for their Esprit range only this time it was "My Last Sony".
Here's mine. Its a Thorens TD160 Super with an SME series III tonearm, Sony STR-6800 SD receiver ( top of the line Sony receivers from the 70s are a rare bargain still), a Meridian 506 CD fed into the DAC of a modern Marantz NA6006 streamer. Speakers are Spendor BC1s and a new pair of Klipsch Heresys. This with a little scotch in the evening once in a while is absolute bliss.

You may be surprised at the 2nd user market prices. A decent Planar 3 £200 easily. Nad 3020a seem to fetch another £100. Not bad for what was a £150 turntable and £85 amp. Mission speakers could be a few more decent ££.I have my late father's circa 1976 Quad 33/303/FM3, (sadly I couldn't find house room for his massive Tannoy Berkeley speakers) and the Missions are now driven by a Roksan Kandy amp and CD deck that was also inherited. In fact it's >25 years since I bought something new.
