55” OLED must look fabulous when standing close to it....
biggrin

To be fair I can see a huge difference in picture quality when I run full 4k UHD content through it regardless of where I'm sat - just learnt how to rip 4k UHD HDR10 discs and the picture quality is stunning. (I never had a "problem" with DVD quality tbh...but 4k is spoiling that a bit.

Going up close just gives even more detail until you're pressing your nose up to the screen smile

32 inch panasonic CRT that was very expensive when I bought it £1200 in 2004. people still comment on the quality of the picture. It had stonking reviews in the specialist magazines etc. It has component video so works well with my ancient surround sound and dvd player, 100hz refresh rate, natural colours (if you don't use the auto settings)

I haven't changed it because a. it works well, b. its in a corner so no benefit from a flat screen as the space behind it is dead.

However - its getting annoying that it doesnt have HDMI inputs as things like Firestick no longer work with an adaptor frown

For our other place we have a 42 inch OLED due to be delivered

I had the 36" version of that minus the stand - I got it half price from the local Comet Scratch & Dent for £750, the front flap was missing but they had a 32" in another aisle so I pulled the flap off to sate my curiosity and it bloody fitted - sold! (I was thinking that's still the most I've paid for a TV then remembered I bought a 28" Toshiba 4:3 CRT and NICAM VCR for £1k...) Only got rid of the Panasonic when the second one started toddling as I was terrified it would crush him should the stand it was on collapse as it weighed 80kg - still worked perfectly after 10 years and struggled to give it away.

Replaced with a 42" Sony 1080p LCD, then picked up a 42" Panasonic plasma for the wee man and me to play his xbox in our bedroom - but it was huge and she griped about it regularly, sold it last year for slightly more than, I paid 18 months later. Picked up a bargain Panasonic 58" dx902 last year with the intention of moving the Sony to the on-order caravan, then block the doorway atwixt kitchen/living room and wall mount it - in the interim it was room dominating as as needs a 1200mm x 400mm minimum cabinet/stand to hold it and the only thing we had was a Danish style wall unit that we removed the detachable top section from! Then we separated and I gave her the choice, first time she ever told me that something was too big...

So I'm in the unfortunate position of having one of the best HDR TV's made and now having an Internet connection that can't handle 4k streaming, and I don’t watch live TV nowadays - in fact I only plugged the aerial in here to make sure the tuner worked as there was only a freesat connection in the old place, removed it after checking it did.
I bought the middle child an Xbox One X for Christmas and Forza 4 looks absolutely sensational! And 1080p blu ray is excellent too - haven't gotten around to getting any 4k discs yet.

My focus has shifted to music now, I'm moving later in the year and thinking I'll relegate it all to a bedroom and just get some good active speakers for the living area.

Edit - as it is right now as I'm just about to pull the amp/speakers out to have them in a better position for stereo, then fit the old ones in place so the kids don't moan...

Samsung 65 QLED in TV room with a 50 QLED in family room. Find them superb, hooked up to Sonos soundbar with Play One Gen2s to support.

65" Sony XH90 in kitchen family room. Actually don't think it's big enough for space. Love the TV so I've bought the 75", and I'll move the 65" to the living room, replacing an older 55". I'm genuinely finding the 55" small now - strange how you just get used to size. As above I remember my 32" CRT Sony seeming huge!

Main TV is 43 inch, but do have a projector with a 120 inch screen if we want to go large.

Went from 40" which seems tiny now, to 55" which just didn't cut it, so after 2 weeks swapped out for a 65". I'm already hankering for a 75". If you have the means, I highly recommend you go as big as you possibly can.

Picked up a Philips 55PUS7805 (55 inch) TV last year - replaced a 42inch that is now in the bedroom. Sofa is only 2 metres away and anything much larger would require a new TV unit. Do like the ambilight feature. Main TVs since 2005 - 28inch CRT, another 28 inch CRT - then when that one also died replaced with a 32 inch 1080p Toshiba (which a friend still uses), 42 inch JVC unit (has a strange issue where it won't play sound until you switch inputs again - but fantastic image quality) and now the Philips 4k.
Could have possibly got a 65 inch TV to fit but not unhappy with the 55 inch.

37" here. Plenty big enough at 1080p in a normal sized room.

Would only go bigger in a dedicated TV room, or if I had a 6m x 6m + lounge for it to be in.

What size is your normal sized room currently? What is the distance to the tv?

43” 4K set is my main tv; I only stream content and the TV is in my bedroom so perfect size. 40” dumb lcd in the second room, and I have a 1080p projector in my living room which throws a 150” picture. Only really use that for dvds and films, but it’s not a high end projector so needs specific conditions in which it works best.

Some colleagues of mine & I came up with a rule that if the dimensions of the room in square ft was less than 4 times the size of the TV in inches it was terribly council.

My front room is 17' x 15' =255'
My tv is 40"

So 255/40=6.3 so I am safe.

If I had a 62" or larger it would be council.*

  • Unless you have a dedicated TV room / Movie room or snug in which case go nuts!

65" in the living room but it works as it's a long flat wall it's against and a new build house and sofa directly opposite.

Wouldn't have worked in my previous flat or victorian terrace house due to size and positioning,

Does anyone still make a TV that goes white or mirrored when off? Remember seeing them for big bucks at Harrods back in the 90’s.

42" Panasonic plasma, our only TV. We have room for a bigger telly but the picture is as good as when we bought it nine years ago and it won't be replaced until it dies. For sound we have it wired up to our old Arcam Solo, which powers a couple of Cambridge Audio speakers, which is perfectly good. We're not huge TV or film watchers so we're not bothered about surround sound or 4k. Honestly at 42" I think we'd struggle to see the difference between 1080p and 4k anyway.

It will be a sad day when it gives up the ghost - we'll have to turn the heating up for a start...

I like the look of the Samsung Frame. Not sure I can justify it though. We currently have a 32" Sony and that only really gets used occasionally by the kids. I can't remember the last time that Mrs Magnum or I switched it on for anything other than a bit of kids programmes. It's probably on for a total of 2 hours / week.
