Prometheus - Ridley Scott's 'Alien Prequel' (or not)...
Discussion
What purpose did Charlize Theron's character actually serve? Apart from doing push-ups in her undies and getting squished in what must be one of the most unintentionally funny scenes in a movie ever, (a rolling ship I ask you )
The captain who makes wild leaps of logic
The intelligent scientist who runs the hovering laser "rovers" which map out the entire site who then bizarrely gets lost.
The other intelligent scientist who moments before wanted to go back to the ship as he was too scared but then bizarrely decides to play koochi-koo with an obviously vicious snake like alien.
The crew members who decide to "do the right thing" with no more fuss or drama then as if they were deciding whether to order pizza or Indian take-away. When the time comes, I hope I'm as blaize as these cool-as-a-cucumber customers.
As the poster above rightly said, the only person who comes out of it with any dignity at all is Fassbender.

Don't forget the scientist whose rigorous proof for her theory is "because I choose to believe it". The captain who makes wild leaps of logic

To be fair, none of the films of the Alien franchise stand up to the sort of concentrated geekery that had damned Prometheus. Scott should have just cooked up some hokum involving running and screaming and a "surprise" twist at the end where the Alien has not been disposed of and needs to be ejected via an airlock (or broken window).

Have to agree. Prometheus is no more flawed than any of the other Alien films. They all have silly holes in the plot that make no sense or that are totally unrealistic. So the latest argument is that the original movies were no better?
Whilst I will agree that Alien shows it's age a little it is still full of genuine tension and is well acted/written throughout.
Aliens is a fantastic 80's action flick full of excitement and great one liners from the cast.
Prometheus has none of the above going for it, and also thinks it's being profound in some way.

Have to disagree, Prometheus is far more stupid than Alien or Aliens, and makes too many mistakes, that's what pisses people off. If either of the first two films had been as bad, then they could not be viewed many times over. When the internal logic of a film has too many failures, repeat viewings drop.

You're looking at the old films through rose-tinted glasses. I like them, I bought the box set, but if you subject them to this degree of scrutiny they crumble too.
You are incorrect that I look at them in rose tinted glasses.I view them on and off, and it is not through the nostalgia of youth. The mistakes of the later ones, make repeat viewings less frequent, but still doable on occasion.
I shall watch Prometheus again, for the visuals. Not sure at this point if it would stand up to a third viewing, but it's possible.

I think it's a bit like a snowball rolling downhill, or exponential force.
There might be a few grumblings, and I am sure there were. But it only gathers momentum and becomes a 'thing' if there are enough, and coalesces together to make something that is bigger than the enjoyment of the film.
Nobody goes into a film to be disappointed and pissed off. I doubt if anyone here did. I didn't. I went in there wanting it to work (because I love good sci-fi) and hoping I would be impressed and manage to willingly suspend that disbelief that I can for so many films. But some of the acting was just awful, the characterisation was poor, and the internal logic failed, possibly due to poor editing, but it doesn't matter if we're dealing with the finished product.
I went in there wanting it to succeed, instead there were too many WTF moments for it to cohesively keep together, like the ship in Airplane 2 it started to shimmy, and once it did that it fell apart like the donought ship falling back to the planet.

No, they really don't, and for the reasons I have already posted. There is no need to scrutnize or analyse Prometheus to find it's gaping flaws, they are averywhere you look.It got non of the basics right, and when you add to that all the plot flaws that have been mentioned you've got a stinker, plain and simple.

:yep: but if there was negative people, picking holes in every obsessive detail, no one would have known!
That's my point. You don't need to pick holes in obsessive details with Prometheus to qualify it as a bad film.Edited by SWoll on Tuesday 9th October 20:20
Example one - the corrosiveness of xenomorph blood depends entirely upon the requirements of the plot at that time.
Example two - the laughable dialogue and characterisation of the space grunts in Aliens.
Example three - Ripley is believed to have destroyed a massively expensive spacecraft and murdered all of the crew, for which she is demoted.
3 and 4 - need I go there?

1. You may have a point there, given how corrosive the blood is there wouldn't have been much left of the facility after the first big firefight.Example two - the laughable dialogue and characterisation of the space grunts in Aliens.

2. I disagree here, I'm sure it's mentioned in the film that the unit had been on several previous 'wild goose chase' bug hunt missions so yes, they were brash and over confident to start with. When things started going bad, I'm not sure you could find any fault with their dialogue and behaviour.
3. Yes Ripley destroyed the ship and only got demoted. However you have forgotten that the company knew about the 'secret' mission (remember the special directives Ash was following) and in all likely hood were trying to cover up what happened. Burkes actions (in sending the colonists out to the SJ vessel) confirm this. In these circumstances, demoting her was a better way of keeping Ripley quiet than going for a big show trial where the existence of the 'bioweapons' could be revealed.
Any more ?
