Agree with this completely. The escalation in the first 2 was excellent, it should have naturally progressed to all out war in the third. Some of the comic storylines even went down the war route and they do find a Queen of all Queens or some such in the end IIRC. No idea why they didn't just tidy that up and film that. Instead we got lumped with a turgid retread of Alien, I know Alien 3 has it fans but I'm not one of them and the less said about subsequent films the better.

Waste of a good franchise and some epic source material IMO.
wow, I never knew.

after a quick skim, seems some of my ideas came to be in comic form.
THey made some damn good comics back in the 90s
From a quick glimpse, I reckon GRR Martin would write a great screenplay, I think there's an element of what he does with hive-consciousness that could be tapped there, to elevate the terror than an alien could provide, far above the pathetic smash-smash-rip horror of what we've been getting.

It just makes logical sense and would have added some great background to our favourite Xenomorphs. Would have also been great to see the Aliens devastate earth due to Weyland Corps greed. Instead they ignominiously kill off all the characters including Newt, the girl Ripley spent a whole film trying to protect and Corporal Hicks, one of the coolest marines and dump Ripley on a prison planet. For me it was such a disappointing way to go considering the scope that is on offer in that universe.

It's the same with Prometheus, the scope to expand on the SJ\Engineer mythos was huge and instead we ended up with this turgid mess.

I've still not managed to stay awake during a showing of "Prometheus" in my parlour; probably best to give up. "Alien" and "Aliens" get even better as the decades pass.

Whenever I stumble upon it on TV I feel myself compelled to watch it (regardless of what stage of the film it is). I know it’s utter rubbish, but I find oddly irresistible.

Very strange.
I think it's the fantastic visuals rather than story that compels us to re-watch...
This, plus an inner feeling that maybe it will be better this one last time smile
If you'd never watched another Alien movie you'd think Prometheus pretty good. The visuals really are amazing on a big screen.

Even as a standalone movie it isn't great - it's the characters that let it down for me. Far too stupid and pretty forgettable.

the visuals are damn fine...it could be like having a racquetball partner, who is beautiful, but stupid, clumsy, mean, incredibly irritating and a general all round fkwit...but you still wanna play racquetball. biggrin

I think in movies where people get killed by monsters the characters normally invite their own deaths somehow, it's a horror/slasher movie staple.

Yes, in a way. Don't go in expecting too much...just let the good looks and predictable outcome wash over you.

Still annoys me that this is what came out of an alien origin movie. I mean how damn good could it have been!
