Great thread, it’s inspired a few re-watches that’s for sure.

Just been enjoying this little Michael Mann montage on the youtubes https://youtu.be/o4TSZh2DY9k

Speaking of Manhunter I love the tiger / blind woman scene... also it took a me few watches to realise that when the baddie is lying down in an expanding pool of his own blood at the end, he actually looks like the red dragon thingy he was obsessed with. Lovely touch.

Heat and The Insider are two of my all time favourite films. Amazing. His later stuff he really went off the boil. Miami Vice I liked but it's not his best, public enemies was poor, Blackhat was erm bad.

I think later on his go to cinematographer Dante Spinotti didnt work with him for some reason and it shows.

Years ago I went to a late night double bill of Thief and Manhunter - there were about 12 people in the audience.

I'd have gone to that. Kind of a nieche thing though I guess, Mann's not much of a populist.

Another great scene in Manhunter... "You've seen these films"

I'm watching the Insider again

This is a brilliant scene. It's dark, moody, haunting music. Nothing really happens but there is immense intimidation of the main character. The cinematography is amazing.

The reveal at the end of Planet Of The Apes is still powerful.

The last seconds of Psycho, when Bates smiles into the camera and a skull is superimposed faintly
over his face on fade out [seemingly this skull didn't appear in all the 35mm prints of the film]

Shelley Winters dead in the car at the bottom of a river in Night Of The Hunter, a really long
underwater shot with Shelley showing [as a swimming champion as a girl] as she did in
The Poseidon Adventure, her talent for underwater acting..

Speaking of underwater...
The crazy water from the ceiling scene in The Big Blue is rather remarkable.
Someone even deconstructed it here:

The 'post rescue' medical assessment scene at the end of Captain Phillips - Tom Hanks' acting is incredible and made all the better by reading the YT comments / general trivia that the nurse treating him isn't an actress - but a real navy nurse told to behave towards the patient in the manner she normally would. Incredibly moving.

Just watched that clip (seen the film before) and I'm welling up.I don't think Hanks gets anything like the credit he deserves as an actor. In that clip, as in many of his other movies, he is brilliant. No other word for it.

Other water-themed one for me would the rescue and failed resuscitation of Ed Harris' ex wife in the Abyss. Apparently the film wasn't rolling for much of the resuscitation/slapping scene and Mastrantonio flat-out refused to do it again. Still brings a tear now sometimes.

Don't watch this if you haven't seen The Abyss, it will lessen the impact and claustrophobia of the rest of the film.

Thanks, I think I've only seen that once and a very long time ago, may have to re-visit.
I watched it the other day to trial my new A/V speakers and it is still fantastic - doesn't seem to have dated as much as other 90s stuff.
First time i had surround sound and got to watch this on my own with the volume turned up, that moment when the breakdown truck sets off....the sounds....cloud9

And the bit when Magua lowers his knife as Alice steps towards the cliff-edge.

In fact, the whole film quite frankly.
I love that bit.

When she jumps and Wes just has a ‘ oh well whatever, nothing of value was lost ‘look on his face

I know it’s not supposed to but he cracks me up. Great actor.

It wasn’t a failed resuscitation.

It was briefly. I was trying to not totally spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it. laugh

I can’t believe there are people who’d be interested in watching this film that haven’t already, it’s donkey’s years old now!

THe Abyss is a gem, but it's a forgotten gem, chances are newer cinema goers probably won't be aware of it.

Night of the Hunter is a cinematic tour-de-force, an amazing one-off from Charles Laughton.
