The rebels were extremely short of ships so used several designs in roles they werent originally intended for.

Plus the falcon was heavily modified with upgraded systems and weapons

Really? It never fires a shot in ROTJ.
Anyhow, fast or not, it mahoosive compared to say, an X-wing. Why would small agile fighters ("...which are evading our defences Lord Vader...") possibly benefit from being accompanied by a big lump of a cargo ship?

It does fire a shot, a few in fact when Lando is flying it during the death star battle at the end.

It had the upgrades long before Ep IV, it had most of them when Han won it from Lando in a card game. It was also meant to be a lot faster than an X-wing and almost as manouvrable. Not as fast as an A-Wing

As to why its in the battle against the DS2, it had concussion missiles, X-wings dont. The missiles were used to take down the shield on the regulator that Wedge blows up with the proton torpedos from the X-Wing

Err...didn't Wedge go for the regulator on the north side as his torpedos wouldnt stand a chance against the size of that reactor and the Falcon took it out with the concussion missiles?????

Look, not only did i grow up with Star Wars I have now watched them all again with my kids.
Well thats my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

You win, thank God. Not sure I could stand the shame of winning this one.

Aargh so many to choose from. I think these are the top of my list but it probably varies with the day of the week

The ORIGINAL Colonial Viper from BSG.

Battlehawk and it's various components from Terrahawks. Dr Ninestein rocked.

The fabulous starfighters flown by Buck and Wilma in Buck Rogers in the 25th century. Biddi-Biddi-Biddi

And finally the wonderful Odyssey from 1980's update of Greek myth that was Ulysses 31.
