US comedy is lightyears ahead at British at the moment I reckon - some of their writing is phenomenal.
Big Bang Theory?
A mate of mine and my little brother, who are on the same comedy wavelength as me, both rave about Big Bang but I just can't get into it.

Horses for courses.

Quite. For myself TBBT, Modern Family and 30 Rock are the best Yankcoms, I do like Community from what I have seen of it but it's not really shown here.

+1 I'd say its one of the best shows on TV at the moment
Might not go that far but I and Mrs SD are too really enjoying the series. We are both of the opinion that each week it gets better too.......

This ranks up there with Curb Your Enthusiasm relating to my kind of humour.

I only discovered Suits a week or so when Dave did a 'Suits day' showing the whole 1st season back to back.

I thought it was brilliant smile

other half was cheering when Jessica was quoting Top Gun to Harvey near the end last night....might have been the wine talking though.

But it's genuinely fun with sharp n fast dialogue - formulaic obviously but liking it a lot

Meghan Markle is not unattractive either :-)

edit - for sense

I love it. It reminds me of me and my old boss, bouncing ideas at each other and trying to be smarter. Last night was very amusing and as someone else mentioned, it's right on my wavelength.

Absolutely. Modern Family, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Community and a few others are also well worth a look.

Their drama is also top notch. People used to mock TV from the USA and claim ours was "the best in the world". Not true anymore - not by a long shot!

The 80s were a looong time ago. The US copied the UK formats, but with more money and a bigger market they have romped ahead since. Don't see that changing in the near future but the UK churns out a real whopper once or twice a year. They're just very short compared to the US ones.

really like that whilst they've made the 2 main guys really sharp, Jessica is sharper. The top gun thing was damn funny
and the Lewis character is genius

Watching the rerun (for me, the first time).
V funny.
V v good.

Legal/medical things often seem to attract consistently good writing (though there are a few exceptions)..
LA Law, Moonlighting, This Life, North Square, Ally McBeal (say what you like, I thought it was superb), Green Wing, Bodies etc..

If you haven't seen it you might also enjoy Boston Legal. Don't be put off by Will Shatner being one of the main characters, it's awesome. (8.3/10 on IMDB...)

On the Suits front season 2 starts airing this week in the US this week so hopefully we won't have to wait much longer.

Where as BBT is the only American comedy I actually like, largely because it's actually quite 'British' - ie fairly low-budget, dialogue-based, characters aren't glossily aspirational.

I'm afraid I can't think of a single other live-action US comedy series I like. They seem far too self-conscious for their own good. Slick snappiness is no substitute for genuine wit, characters in sitcoms aren't necessarily meant to be good-looking or in any way cool (think about Blackadder, Alan Partridge or Fawlty Towers for example - is there a single character you'd actually want to be?), and it's far easier to be consistently funny over a series that lasts six episodes rather than thirty.

I've tried watching them all, and they all without question left me cold. I'm still not entirely sure Suits is even meant to be a comedy, rather a mildly absurdist drama.

There's a lot of st British comedy,.there's a lot of st us comedy. Both have improved hugely.

Suits isn't an out and out comedy, no.

As for us comedies only portraying good looking/cool characters?! Frasier, mash, Seinfeld, curb, 30 rock, Eastbound, community.... I'm getting tired now , all shot through with massively flawed characters, often a huge amount of pathos, very well written and above all, as hilarious as anything from this side of the pond.

Comedy tastes are unique but I've always been baffled by the misplaced superiority complex we brits have over it.
