Christ that's a bargain!! I recorded all of the shows on VHS when they were on BBC2 the first time around, then bought the DVD re-releases individually as they came out.

Having seen most of the mid and late episodes on Dave, I searched out the very first episode on youtube to see how it all started, and I have a couple of questions...

The computer can only support one hologram which was the guy who died before the radiation leak. So assuming radiation doesnt affect the holograms, why is he not still alive instead of Rimmer?
Secondly, assuming the first hologram was affected by the radiation, why is it Rimmer that gets resurrected from all the piles of ash instead of any of the more senior members like the Captain?

Holly brings back the person best-suited to keeping Lister sane/company - Rimmer.

I hope the new series is a return to form; part of the charm of the early series of RD was its simplicity and comedic timing, combined with a sharp script. Pretty much all of that went when Grant and Naylor parted ways, and they started trying to shoehorn in loads of CGI. The crappy sets were part of what made it work to be honest!

Him and Danny John Jules both tweeted after reading the scripts for the first time saying it was back to being at it's best. Guess we'll have to wait and see though. I'm looking forward to it.
They said that about the Dave specials as well, and they were toss. If nothing else, the new series needs to do a much better job explaining why they're all that much older. Hopefully they'll get back to (sort of) following the books again, as I found Last Human to be pretty funny.

yes The odd Britishness and BBC special effects department. It then started to have a slick film look to it and I am sure in one episode one of the characters actually says 'ZEE' banghead

Every crew member was killed by the radiation leak apart from Lister who was in stasis as punishment for smuggling his pet cat aboard following his recuperative shore-leave on Titan after being dumped by Kochanski.

Lister's cat evolved into 'Cat' in Red Dwarf's hold over the following 2 million years as Holly waited for the background radiation to disperse to a level safe to re-animate Lister.

Rimmer was chosen by Holly to occupy the only hologram slot as he was the crew member deemed most able to keep Lister sane whilst lost in space (largely by being such an insufferable smeg-head).
