I think it's a typing error, he probably meant "which" not "wish" as in Ford was also in Apocalypse Now (which was still 2 years after Star Wars anyway smile )

...and as we all know, Ford's character in Apocalypse Now was called George Lucas.

Continuing the thread: I saw an episode of Seinfeld yesterday, it was the episode where they were casting actors for Jerry's NBC pilot, one of the people up for the role of George was a young (and balding) Jeremy Piven (Ari Gold off of Entourage).

Ford was certainly fairly well known by 1979 - mainly through Star Wars but as you can see from my list, he had also appeared in a number of relatively big films.

Yep, phone typing error. And a "fail to confirm what I thought on IMBD" error as well

To make up for it I have a good one - John Candy (maybe) in Hercules in New York. If you haven't heard of that it's a very obscure, so bad it's genius, Arnie film before anyone knew who he was either. There is someone who looks a hell of a lot like John Candy in it, but no one has ever been able to confirm if it was him or not

She was Holland's bit of stuff, not a waitress. I think it might have been her first role though, she was lovely.cloud9

Was also in Knowing Me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge. As was Johnny Vegas in the French episode I think.

I watched that too.

Wasn't the psychiatrist that Bill Murray visited played by Adrian Brody?

It always interests me when I watch old things and a face pops up, sort of recognisable, younger and leaner, then it disappears because it's a walk on three or a bit part.

Recent ones I have spotted.
  1. A very young Jonny Lee Miller as a leather clad love interest of Onslo's wife in Keeping Up Appearances
  2. Viggo Mortenson in Witness
  3. Jake Gyllenhaal as the kid in City Slickers
  4. Tom Hardy as 'Hi I'm character A' who promptly gets blown up seconds later in Band of Brothers.
I don't know who any of these people are. Are they REALLY famous?

No, but it would appear you have been in a coma for the last 10 years, so not all good news. smile

Nope - just not interested in newer films, probably.

Maybe my life is just too packed to bother with watching rather than doing.

I heard somewhere in the dim and distant past, that Harrison Ford was a carpenter building sets, and George Lucas 'spotted' him and ended up giving him the role in Star Wars?

Or did I dream it?

It's true. By then Ford had already 'starred' in The Conversation and American Graffiti. He learned carpentry as a trade for when acting dried up. Worked out well for him.

It may have some truth in it - but the film was probably "American Graffiti", which Lucas made in 1973.

Many actors and performers take on other work to supplement their often meagre income from acting, singing etc. Elvis was a truck driver. Both Matt Monrow and Paul Daniels drove buses.

I’m sure I read somewhere that HF had returned to carpentry after American Graffiti but had remained friends with George Lucas. GL was determined to cast actors he’d not used before in Star Wars and asked Harrison to help him in the auditions by reading with the prospective actors- during this process GL realised that he was perfect for the character of Han Solo.

Back to the original OP, Richard Dreyfuss had his first on-screen lines in a blink-an-you’ll-miss-it cameo in The Graduate.

That's how I recall it. He had had limited success at acting but everyone needs drawers.biggrin
