Whats going on with the cars in this series?
Montalbano is driving a old Tipo and Mimi is in an old Alfa, the rest of the island are in much more modern stuff

Is Montalbano some kind of Autoste fan? He is a Commissario, wouldn't he be entitled to a car? Giulia maybe? Stelvio?

I think I remember reading that in the books he's seemingly the only man in Italy who doesn't care about nice cars and is obviously too busy with all the stunning women and drinking coffee to bother caring. smile

His Fiat is part of the furniture. It wouldn't be the same with him in a new car.

didn't Montalbano get the Tipo at some point in the young Montalbano series? I agree it is odd seeing the rest of the cars get newer around it, but I rather like it.

The Tipo also aged in reverse.

The biggest anachronism isn't that he still has the same old car, it's that it isn't battered to death. Every car in that part of the world has suffered in some way from the roads and the kerbs and the driving. Just look at the way they drive in the show, and that's pretty tame compared to reality.

That poor Alfa they took up that dirt road for example is probably really suffering given the way it was bouncing off the scenery.

Meanwhile the Tipo carries on with all the panels still straight (-ish).

The driver of the Alfa is known to drive fast and Montalbano frequently has a go at him about it, Montalbano hates driving and cars, so does as little driving as possible and doesn't care what he drives.

With all the immigrants, the mentioning of ISIS and the helicopter was newer than 2006.

Weirdly, the BBC website has the wrong info - it's listed there as being series six (2006), when it's actually the premiere of series thirteen.

Really enjoyed last night's episode - I love the way the camera lingers on the backdrop occasionally, or on the smiles of the female characters.

After seeing this thread a few times, I stumbled on it last week for the first time. Then last night I suggested it to the wife, and we both enjoy it. It's like Touch of Frost but with some sunshine.

Last Saturday's episode was pure genius.

The usual quite dark crimes ,murder .prostitution etc.

Montalbano jealous and suspicious of his partner Livia and her friend the priest.

And Caterella ,the bumbling policeman ,hacking into the dating website.

Oh and random beautiful women dotted around the plot.

It's not on this week ,has series finished already ?

The last 3 or 4 weeks have been reruns of previous years. Only the first 2 of this run were new films. They have only been making 2 per year for the last 4 years.

I hadn't seen last Saturday's but had seen the week before's.

I forget it's on as they hide it away on BBC4 and often miss it.
