The Island -Bear Grylls

Picture advertising it shows the bloke on the far left with a hook instead of a hand, unless I missed something pretty sure everyone had 2 hands at the start and that photo looks to be taken at the end, interesting!
No, I spotted that in last night's episode. You don't think if a participant lost his hand he'd probably leave the island for lengthy recuperation and rehabilitation?Devilstreak said:

On catch up at the moment...looks good so far, although the police guy is a bit full on! He's trying to take control...and it doesn't seem to be happening!
He's very irritating!I'd eat him first if food was scarce.
Abos used to eat them in OZ - it didn't seem to occur to anyone that they were short of food ...plus one guy had a machete.
13 of them and only a few trying to make a fire. What were the rest doing during this time?
I'd be suggesting some explore the island to find running water, others try to find a decent food source/start fishing and others start on a shelter.
A bunch of lush less sods so far. Only ones looking like doing anything were the doctor and the other 2 trying to create a fire.

I'm no Bear Grylls but the minute it came to the fire starting point I did wonder why they weren't using the glasses method. At least run it in tandem with the two stick method. Additionally, I would have thought that they would have learnt about a solar filter system in that one day of training?
Will be interesting to see how the team dynamics evolve in the next episodes.

I was thinking when they were finding all the rubbish on the beach that there must be a glass bottle washed up somewhere to start a fire with...especially as it was so sunny.s m said:

Why? The gay hairdressers glasses are as thick as jam jars, I'm sure they'd do the job. What's the betting they were told they're not allowed, much like the people on the Apprentice aren't allowed to use Google or the internet?
"No no, you cannot improvise and work out alternative methods, you must try rubbing two sticks together!"

Did anyone else see that boa constrictor and think " Barbecued snake? ".

Bear Grylls would have had that eaten and would be using it's skin to carry his piss in before you could blink Abos used to eat them in OZ - it didn't seem to occur to anyone that they were short of food ...plus one guy had a machete.

Yes either would have done the trick - glasses or an old bottle
I get that but why waste time looking for a broken bottle when you could just use gay travellers glasses? I can't believe that not a single one of them had this idea so it has to be a restriction placed on them by the producers, right? Nobody is that thick, are they?Oakey said:

Ive never tried, but it wouldn't occur to me that you could make fire with a pair of glasses.I know you can focus a magnifying glass but never occurred to me that you could do it with glasses.

I conclude that Oakey was the kid with glasses burning ants by himself.

Haven't watched this yet, but I'm pretty sure a concave lens (as worn by the myopic) is useless for focussing a beam.
Reading glasses, on the other hand…
Correct, normal glasses would diverge the suns light not concentrate it. The lenses on the front of the cameras on the other hand would probably have had a fire going in seconds.Reading glasses, on the other hand…

I was just going to say that, you could try all day with my glasses, which are pretty thick, and achieve absolutely nothing. Reading glasses, on the other hand…
