I'd been harping on to my family for weeks about how they had made no effort to make a raft, which would have enabled fishing further out into the bay. Amazing how one appeared in the last episode. I think you have to be careful what wood you use - I think coconut trees are porous and go soggy very quickly, but there must have been other species. And plenty of strong twine for binding, amongst all the jetsam.

Two rafts even better - use them to seal off the entrance to the inlet, and string nets between them.
Yeah, I'm suprised they didn't go for polynesian-style canoes, no saw to cut the timber with but you can still burn a tree down carefully...

Does go to show though, just how much a few simple tools would make the world of difference.
As long as they are the official Bear Grylss Gerber range. The whole thing has been one big advert for his branded kit.

Err.. really? If so it was a rubbish advert; I watched the whole thing and this is the first I've heard of his products.

Gerbils???? What gerbils? They'd be a bit soft for cutting down timber, but good for keeping you warm at night.

The shirt he wore for every piece to camera had an orange BG logo on it.

The tools also had distinctive orange markings too.

What did you expect Bear Grylls to use on a Bear Grylls programme? He'd be a bit of a dumb arse if he didn't wouldn't he?

TBH it was the bright orange Gerber kit I noticed first. But you're quite right, it'd be mad for him not to.

Given he's a full on God botherer, I'm just waiting for his BG branded Bible and Crucifix range and then I'll be high tailing over to the frivolous purchases thread. Day Glo crucifx necklace? What's not to like??

Didn't know he was a god botherer, well, I suppose a few homilies like 'the Lord will provide' and 'boil your drinking water' will stand them in good stead.... smile

Some of products he endorses are actually quite good but the potential embarrassment of being seen with his brightly logo-ed stuff puts me off buying it.

He uses the gear in any programmes he does now - presumably has it written into the contract.

His biography has two distinct halves. Part 1 is about his SAS exploits. Part 2 is all about the baby Jesus. Well, I assume it is. I found it a turgid read as it was, so when I started on the second half and he was carping on about his Spanish gardener, I gave up.

I did exactly the same. I gave up after the 2nd half and went to Alan's for a bacon buttie.

Recommend this - first episode was great.

Lots of upthemselves millenials against upthemselves early middleagers - baby boomers.

Old Frank is a classic - very capable 66 yr old, listens to nobody.

Last night, found a beach, made fire, built a camp and then nearly drowned himself and threatened to walk!!! All in 2 days.

Young cockney manque fool on young team Ben - put everyone's backs up.

Usual reality TV conflicts - if yo have issues with your parents or your kids - this is your chance to see them played out painfully

Frank is his own worst enemy. He's clearly hard-working and skilled, but doesn't accept that not everyone is like him. He is pre-conditioned to believe all people under 40 years of age are a waste of space. He really needs to calm down and give others a chance to prove themselves. Like a lot of men of his age, he's self-reliant. Other generations aren't like that.

Yeah Initially I quite liked him as I agree a strong work ethic is essential. But he's a bit extreme.

Why don't they ever try to catch sea birds? With a net or something. Drinking bad water is mad.

When the older group did their first crossing to the other island, Frank found fresh water running down the rocks to the beach - he drank some on the spot so it should be OK. Is this the water source for the whole party? The stuff they're drinking is obviously badly polluted and doesn't look like the source of water I'm talking about.

On previous The Island shows the group has done beachcombing, and it often turns up fishing nets and the like. This lot don't yet seem to have bothered with a round-the-island exploration.

I know these shows are for conflict, but jesus, they find some real tools.

That old fool...man what a massive turd, he out people's lives at risk by doing what he did. How come they weren't furious at him?...was he asked to do it?
