Watched a couple this week.

Brawl in cell block 99

A very odd movie. It's quite drawn out and stars a socially odd Vince Vaughn as a drug runner who ends up in prison. It's not your normal prison movie and the violence is taken to "walking dead" levels of gore. It's not really like much I've seen before but not in a good way.

4/10

Wind River

It's been covered on here before but it really is a good movie.

8.5/10
Its interesting how polarising some films can be, as I was blown away by Brawl in cell block 99 and its one of my favorite films of the year.

Will have to check out Wind River

Very cheaply made sci fi thriller Infinity chamber

Call it a cross between the Cube and Groundhog day.

Great film, and the director achieved this look on a tiny budget, maybe another District 9 type dude.

I watched the Shining for the first time the other night, I thought it was pretty decent and I liked the way it keeps you on edge even though hardly anything is happening. I have read a few theories surrounding the ended but yet to be convinced by any of them.

Justice League - wow! Where to start? This really was st, and I do have quite some tolerance for poor movies! I quite enjoyed large chunks of Suicide Squad but this.... hurl

I really can't see how DC can do reasonably well on the small screen but cock it up so badly on the big screen (IMO Flash was dreadful - quite possibly one of the worst performances I've seen recently).

There are 2 post/mid credits scenes

Theories?

It's based on a novel which has a completely different ending, so for whatever reason it's just whatever was decided worked for the film.

Sorcerer

Kermode has been promoting this like mad on Film Review - a classic never seen because it was released on the same day as Star Wars. Directed by William Freidkin, he of French Connection and Exorcist fame.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a film quite like it before. At two hours, it's a film of two halves. The first hour is character development which whilst not slow is not particularly fast paced either. But the second half is about a series of disparate characters finding themselves transporting wagons full of nitroglycerin through a south american jungle - 1970's ice road trucker.

The bridge scene is the movie poster/main set piece - and I'm struggling to remember a more tense piece of film. But for me the film's main strength was how it conveyed a total sense of personal isolation. Really quite powerful.

Stars Roy Scheider which for me is a good thing and there is a lot of that Jaws, staring into the distance, going on.

Like Taxi Driver, you'll need to be in the right mood to watch it and like Taxi Driver it has that gritty, 1970's nihilistic tone that you either love or hate. It takes time to layer the filth on top of it, which may have some reaching for their phone.

8/10 for me. I would 10/10 recommend Taxi Driver to anybody. However I suspect Sorcerer will be more marmite. Don't underestimate the simple pleasure in watching a film with no CGI in it though.

Very good trailer (with no spoilers): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BDbIzovuos
sounds like a rip off/remake of The Wages of Fear -1953 thriller.

Watched the last episode of Ozark last night.

Not a film but a film quality series, in fact the first series that I have seen.

Very entertaining, very well made and the characters were spot-on! I especially enjoyed Jason Bateman's performance. Role on Series 2.

Yeah theories about why Jack is in the picture from the 20's in the end when the film is set in the 80's. I read one about that its the hotel claiming another victim and everyone in the picture is a victim of the hotel, another one I read was that Jack was a reincarnation of himself. I went through google and read a few of them. They must have went with this ending for a reason.

Never seen the film, now I'm intrigued.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer. C-Grade attempt at Kubrick. Interesting but doesn't quite come off. Hard to like or care about any of the (pretty weird) characters (except perhaps the ultimately doomed son).

Nicole Kidman definitely has fake boobs.

Watched this earlier in the week and loved it but I've enjoyed the director's other work which has the same odd black humour and delivery. If anyone saw The Lobster, it's from the same guy. Very, very weird if you're not prepared for it to be.

'She's out of my league'

Don't go into this expecting anything other than a 'nerdy boy meets gorgeous girl, nerdy boy gets gorgeous girl, nerdy boy loses gorgeous girl, nerdy boy gets gorgeous girl back and they live happily ever after'. Some funny bits, some sweetness to it. Nothing challenging. 6 out of sunday afternoon.

Sea Oak.

A short Amazon Pilot film with Glenn Close, Jane Levy and Jack Quaid. 'Odd' just about covers it. If you liked Bubba Ho-Tep, you might like this. I do and I did.

Featuring Alice Eve, daughter of Trevor Eve and Sharon Maughan (gold blend advert posh totty biggrin), who play her mum and dad in the film.

Nice brain out American youth format.

Grand Budapest Hotel.
I normally enjoy Wes Anderson, but never really got into this story. I did enjoy it, but not like earlier efforts.
