Hidden Figures

True story based on a group of female African American mathematicians working at NASA during the space race, and when 'coloured' people could only use certain water fountains, toilets, etc, etc.

Best film i've seen for a long time, 10/10

LotR and Pottr are two of the biggest franchises, they are failure on paper?
2. The Lord of the Rings trilogy made over $2.9 billion in box office, and yet showed “horrendous losses.”

4. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix made $939 million worldwide, and yet ended up with a $167 million loss.

The same as Apple paying 11.8 million corporate tax off 1.9 billion revenue in the UK, in 2014. But i bet the people stealing movies have Apple products. the list goes on, corporate accounting is nothing new. it is a weak argument and any justification just makes you look stupid, it is wrong and morally wrong.

Dunkirk...

Very poor i thought.. Not enough budget/money/ships/men/aircraft etc etc
It just did not have the epic scale required to convey the drama.
They don't make them like they used to...

I watched Kingsman tonight, before i'd seen the trailer for the next one i'd never heard of it! It's so fast moving you can't take your eyes off the screen, 8/10.
One of my worst movies of whatever year it was...2016?
2014. I thought it good for the mood I was in; Fri eve, tired and halfway through a bottle of wine. It didn't need much brain power, just the wherewithall to be able to look at the screen for 1.5hrs or whatever it was, some big names in there too.
So you won't be looking out for the next one in September? wink

Dunkirk.

Good film portraying the experience from a number of different personal perspectives.

A different approach to the war film and I liked it.

The use of mostly little known actors was good as it left you guessing what would happen to them throughout.

The three different timelines and how they tied together was clever, but didn't feel contrived.

Some clever use of some iconic images from Dunkirk.

The score added to the sense of foreboding and time running out and the helplessness of the troops on the Mole, especially, was tangible as they stood there being bombed and strafed while hoping for rescue.

There were a few bits I'd have changed, but then no-one pays me to make films and probably sensibly so!

4 out of 5.

I did think the same - some scenes look a little 'sparse', but having looked at a few photos of the evacuation of Dunkirk, it doesn't look like there was ever a huge amount of ships or boats around at any one time.

I'd agree with this. Not only was it an insight in to the space program but the state sponsored racism of the time.

I liked that they didn't ram the racism down the viewer's throat and instead just made it part of the story - nothing to say it was wrong, just showed it how it was and let the story show how crazy it was.

I wasn't expecting a lot from a PG certificate but I really enjoyed it.

a sign of the times unfortunately - when cinema goers want more CGI and bigger explosions even when they weren't there in real life

I thought Dunkirk was Nolan's finest cinematic production yet, but far from his finest film.

An incredible experience but a classic case of 'won't be anywhere near as good on Bluray'.

7.5/10

Watched Sully last night...meh. CGI was pants, and the lack of subtlety in the investigation jarred - good / bad guys were painted so black and white, there was very little nuance in the NTSB investigators.

Hanks and Eckart were good though.

6/10

Watched a couple of films last night in recommendation:

White Island.
I thought this would be 90 mins of Ibiza raving, but turned out to be actually quite good, great story line with a few twists. Example should stick to music though. 6/10

This is 40.
Not as funny as I'd been led to believe, but quite a good take on this period of life. Wouldn't watch again tho. 4/10.

My nephew went to see it and met a veteran of Dunkirk and he said it was like being back there again.

yes and this is the general film discussion thread. For those who generally cant be arsed with posting in a different thread for every film.

It's actually a discussion of what films people have watched, rather than an in-depth discussion of each film. I think it's a reasonable request that extensive discussion about a certain film should be done in the discussion thread for that film, where one exists.
