Started watching "Bernie" last night. I had high hopes but...........

Couldn't get past the first half hour. Didn't like the format.

Kept on thinking Jack Black was going to leap out playing a guitar!

Captain Phillips

A bit of TomHanks in a cracking film about the hijack of a US tanker by Somali pirates. Good plot, well filmed with ideal tension throughout.

Agree, watched some of it yesterday evening - it's not one of the better ones. The Toyota still looks cool though.

Great film, but I think it's only a 'sort-of' true story. Lots of the people who were there disagree pretty strongly with the portrayal of Captain Phillips.

I also watched Captain Phillips the other night, a good film, not bothered how much is true and how much isn't.

Last night completed "Taken 3", again not bad but not really related to the previous two in the same way that the second was related to the first, unless I missed a bit. The odd reference to the "I will find you and I will kill you" speech was a nice touch.

Four Weddings was on the other night as well. I had wondered why Love Actually and Notting Hill are on so often, where this one is rarely shown, as I think of them as being related films. But it's clear that Four Weddings has dated much more than the other two, so maybe that's why.

I think that's true for any "facts-based" film. Even Apollo 13 had some embellishments (the argument in the capsule never happened, but Ron Howard said it was necessary for the drama of the story).

That's why so many say 'based on real events'.

And some are very, very loosely based.....

Arrival

Enjoyed this, one of the better what if aliens land films, love the concept behind the aliens experience of life
This was up there with one of the films of the year last year for me, minus the love story cheesy ending. Not sure if this was due to the fact I thought it was going to be scensoredt and it ended up being really good.

The Dark Tower

I know its not real but it just got ridiculous. I'm sure the book is a different kettle of fish (Stephen King) but it got all very predictable and stupid. Looking forward to Logan Lucky and American made this weekend

Don't care; for me personally You Only Live Twice is the definitive James Bond movie although not without its flaws (namely the horrendous "Thish ish my japaneesh fashe" bit halfway through the film. But the goods far outweigh the negatives:

  • Space crafts that swallow up other space craft
  • Launched from a volcano base in Japan with a retracting roof
  • Monorail in the villain's lair
  • Movable launch pad in the villain's lair
  • Piranha pool with a collapsible bridge in the villain's lair
  • Moving Helipad... in the villain's lair
  • Convertible 2000GT
  • Twin-engine helicopter with a giant magnet that lifts the baddies car off the road and dumps it in the ocean
  • The opening joke when Bond is apparently killed whilst in bed with a girl "He died on the job; he would have wanted it that way"
  • Little Nelly
  • Extended fight scene at the docks when the do that really long sweeping take from a helicopter camera
ETA:
  • The theme song as mentioned by SWoll below
  • The fact is encapsulates what the JB franchise is - espionage taking place in far-flung exotic locations.
YOLT is the film that kick-started my love with Japan so that's probably why I like it so much. I admit it is ropey in places though; not only the Japanese-ification bit, but also when he beds the femme fatal and proceeds to completely reveal to her that he's James Bond, he's a spy and he's working for the Brits.

Not to mention a truly great theme song by Nancy Sinatra.

Logan

Really enjoyed it and for a film about mutants probably the bost human of the lot.

John Wick 2

Better than the first, interested if they do a third as the end was quite a good take for how it could he.

Ghost in the Shell

Great sci fi that had Robocop/Bladerunner themes with an excellent cast. Seemed to have a few futuristic Lotus styled cars too.

For the xxxxthousandth time, the Blues Brothers.

Sky are showing the full movie in what appears to be hd & without the crap editing for ads that plagues the itv/c4 channel 5 etc showings.

A pleasure from start to finish. Just superb/10

Introduced my 13 year old son to it just the other day. Not quite sure what he made of it all TBH, but appeared to be smiling throughout. smile
