This is the case for any loss of consciousness, even just sleep, how do you know that you are the same person when you wake up?
I am getting my name tattooed backwards on my forehead for when dotage kicks in full time.

Am I the only one who was disappointed? I felt that the changes to the Envoy backstory, generally softening of Kovacs character and making Kawahara his sister make it a much worse story than the book. Particularly the last few episodes and conclusion was poor in my opinion.
You are not alone.

TV is never as good as the book. But as i've not read the book after watching the series I will get the book

I've read many good books that have gone into a series or movie. And even the best one's are not a patch on the books.

I'm not saying I didn't enjoy enjoy the series per se, but the changes and omissions above were a disappointment.

I looked at it the same way as Hitchhikers Guide (though initially I was worried). That had a few versions, book, radio TV and film, all a tad different. Initially mortified with the film but gave it time and now see it as OK.

I was hung up on this not following the book but watching it, decided to take it for what it was rather that pin it to the book and get all umbragey over it.

Considering the books would be very hard to translate to screen, I think they've done a decent job. With a lot of other book translations, they can easily decide it's too inaccessible for mainstream audiences, dumb it down or turn it into something completely different. Baring a few plot points, this is still recognizable as the same story so I'm pretty grateful they've done the source material some justice.

If you're looking for another cyber punk noir fix Mute lands on Netflix tomorrow, the follow up to the film Moon.

I was suckered into watching Mute yesterday by Netflix, I should have payed more attention to what I was selecting but normally Netflix highlights what was watched last. So I thought I was resuming Altered Carbon ep 7 or 8 and Mute actually had me believing it was Altered Carbon for a good hour as it had pretty much the same scenery back ground, I just thought it was a spin off episode from the main story. Anyway after an hour I googled Altered Carbon episode guide and found it wasn't part of the series. banghead

Anyway I thought Mute was a bit rubbish and turned it off. (I am gonna have to reluctantly resume it at some point because I want to see what happened)

Back to Altered Carbon, I have never read the books and I thought the series was great. You cant watch it without full attention as it can get confusing. I really enjoyed it but after reading through this thread I have started to become dissapointed with the ending and how the sister pretty much took over the final couple of episodes. Still very good and hopefully there will be a second series. which looks like it wont be in Rykers skin

I've just finished watching this and have a mixed view. I thought it was quite well made, with adequate special effects, but some of the acting was ropey, dialogue/sound was indistinct and mumbled. The story was suitably complex, with a few "no idea whats going on" moments, which became clear as the story evolved. The plot/scenarios used pretty much every SF/cyberpunk trope going, leaning heavily on blade runner.

Overall, I enjoyed it as the plot was not spoon fed to the viewer, there were adult themes, and there were some interesting (if not new) ideas. I don't feel like it needs another series, as I don't think it will add much to the stories or characters. Just to add, I've not read the books, so came to it cold.

Not familiar with the books but up to episode 6 already.

Nice to see Max Headroom again.

Superflouous sex scenes are superflouous. Some of the violence equally OTT. Looks like Blade Runner down at street level.

But quite a spectacle and we're hanging in there (me and eldest son).

Five episodes in and I've decided to end it, never done that once I've started a program. I absolutely love Sci fi but this just seemed so un fluid, too much unexplained stuff going on and stuff being said it feels like I should have prior knowledge of things which I don't. Having never read the books maybe I'm missing out. Don't get me wrong it looks gorgeous but just not enjoying it.

Can some one spoiler a quick synopsis of what happens from there to end?

The later episodes tie together and explain what you've seen in the early ones. It's watching all the way through that makes it work.

In isolation the first ones are just buildup without really knowing anything.

Just expected more from 5 hours in. Certainly not working for me up to that point. Maybe i'll dip in at some point, maybe not. Shame as I said gorgeous visuals if not a massive rip off on Bladerunners world in terms of look and tech.

I watched this and really quite enjoyed it.

I'd agree that some of the acting is Sci-Fi Channel midweek afternoon fare (including, sadly, the main character), but it looks good.

The violence is a little gratuitous at times, but I guess the whole point is that being 'alive' is irrelevant if you can just be resleeved and those who refuse to be resleeved are quite an interesting sideline that's never really explored.

To be honest, though, it's a bit like a sci-fi "Strike Back" - Lots of violence and killing, some sex tossed in and a rather flimsy plot to hang all the set pieces together on.

I've not read the book (books?), but I'd imagine from a few of the conversations between mass murders and endless torture scenes that there's quite a complicated back story that's only skimmed over.

I did enjoy it, but I don't think it's half as deep and meaningful as it'd have liked to have been.

I am late to this party and only saw the first episode Saturday evening. I've been busy since then and am surprised the effect it had on me. I'm irritated that I probably won't be able to watch the next episode until Weds.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll stick with it.

Your last comment rings a bell with me. It reminds me of Bladerunner. It became a comment on modern society only after it became a cult movie.

Lots of money seems to have been thrown at it. Shame so little was spent on acting lessons for the lead.

I quite enjoyed the first season and now, Altered Carbon has been renewed by Netflix for a second season.

Anthony Mackie will replace Joel Kinnaman as Takeshi Kovacs though.

^ Yeah - plus iirc he changes sleeves a few times in some of the books.

Good news.

He changed sleeves in the first book, his assault of head in the clouds was in the tech ninja sleeve instead of a clone.

But I understand from a viewer pov you don't want to confuse the connection with the main lead.
